According to Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, southwest Florida, including the Fort Myers area, is also a high-fire-danger area. Florida is in the tropics, which means hot weather brings fires. For residents, fire safety becomes more of an issue every day. Florida and Colorado both have unusual weather that often is the cause of the raging fires that can quickly become emergency situations for residents. Fire weather is a topic every Florida and Colorado resident is aware of and keeping their eyes alert for.
Boulder most recently has had evacuations with raging, out-of-control wild fires. Wild fires can jump roads and create havoc in neighborhoods and cities, just as they have done in Colorado. Two planes dropped water down on the raging wild fires which didn't stop the fires from wreaking havoc on houses.
If you live in a high-fire-danger area, there are a few tips that can help you survive through the fire seasons. If you are prepared, your family will have a plan of action in case of evacuations. Evacuation for wild fires is very much like evacuating for hurricanes. You need to have a plan of action and get out quickly. Here are a few tips to help you if you live in a high-risk area.
Keep empty boxes handy in case you need to pack your belongings quickly.
Keep all important documents in plastic containers as they are easy to move.
Keep a battery-operated radio on hand in case you need to leave quickly.
If you are told to evacuate, evacuate. Belongings can be replaced. Lives can't.
Create a plan of action for your family. If an emergency happens, everyone will be prepared.
Listen to emergency officials. They know what to do and how to get through wildfire emergency situations.
Only take what is necessary. When wildfire evacuations occur, sometimes you only have time for the clothes on your back. If all else fails, take pictures off of walls, your emergency papers, medical documents, baby books plus pictures, etc.
Plan ahead for your pets. Have food prepared if you are staying in a motel so your pets are well-fed too.
Many times wild fires destroy homes, possessions, and things we love. When this happens, you will go through a loss and grieving period. Give yourself time to grieve over what you've lost. Gather your family and friends close during this time as you will need their love, comfort, and encouragement.
Wild fires can happen in Florida or across the country in California to Boulder, Colo.. As soon as you hear wild fires are breaking out, have a plan of action. You never know if you will be evacuated. Evacuations can be life-or-death situations and should never be taken lightly. Be responsible. Stay safe. Most of all, be thankful for your loved ones.
