Colorado Springs Children Flying to the North Pole

Chloe Logan
On Saturday, December 15th, 50 Colorado Springs children will be flown to the 'North Pole' to meet Santa Clause.

As per a press release issued by Skywest Airlines and published on prnewswire.com, this fantasy of the children's will be realized through the efforts of SkyWest Airlines, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SkyWest, Inc.(SKYW), in conjunction with the Junior League of Colorado Springs and Community Partnership for Child Development (CPCD). These organizations have joined forces to arrange for the children to board a Bombardier manufactured Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ700) to leave Colorado Springs en route to the North Pole.

In truth, the children will leave gate 11, and fly for 30 minutes before landing at gate 15, where the North Pole will be simulated and Santa will be flown in via helicopter. Santa, Mrs. Clause and the elves will be present to greet the children, and enjoy with them festivities such as dinner, music, dancing, clowns, face painting, balloon artistry and gifts. The event will last from about 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The media is encouraged to attend, and from those who do a name will be drawn for one to fly back with the children at the end of the evening.

Said Lori Hunt, SkyWest Airlines vice president, "The magic of the season comes alive when you're a child, and we are excited to share Christmas joys with local children in need...We are pleased to partner with the community to offer this experience for the children of Colorado Springs."

Most of the children who will be attending the event are enrolled in head start through Community Partnership for Child Development (CPCD). Children enrolled in these programs live below the poverty level, have a special or identified need, or are at risk for school failure due to a situation in the home. In the current year, over 1,600 children are enrolled in the CPCD program in El Paso County in Colorado.

The Junior League of Colorado Springs is a non-profit women's organization. Their purpose is to promote volunteerism and promote the potential of women. They also have a mission of community improvement through the efforts of volunteers. The Junior League is an advocate for children and youth by helping them to become effective and valued citizens in their communities. Most major cities have a Junior League branch, and some have several chapters.

SkyWest Airlines is celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2007. They have won such prestigious awards as FAA's AMT Gold Award for maintenance training in 2004 and 2005, and the AMT Diamond award in 2006.
