It costs approximately $15,000 a week to run one the country's largest sanctuaries for lions, tigers, bears and other wild animals. The executive director of the sanctuary, Pat Craig, believes that the lag in donations is a result of people diverting their funds to other causes, such as the 2004 tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.
They currently have about 150 animals at the sanctuary, including 30 bears, 20 mountain lions, 75 tigers, and dozens of leopards, African lions and other big cats. Because almost every zoo in the country already has a serious surplus problem with these types of animals, it is likely that the animals will have to be euthanized.
