Colorful Compass Point in Nassau, The Bahamas: A Review

Sea Front Huts Invite Relaxation and Fun

Sandra Essary
There's a resort in Nassau, the Bahamas, which is totally out of the way of mainstream tourist attractions, yet I stay there every time I visit Nassau. So why would I want to stay at Compass Point - and only at Compass Point - any time I visit Nassau?

In a word, relaxation. I am never as relaxed on trips to Nassau as when I go to Compass Point Beach Resort. It takes a day or two for that deep relaxation to kick in, but once it does, I definitely don't want to leave my little hut by the sea.

The first time I stayed at Compass Point, the taxi ride from the airport veered away from where most of the other taxis were going to in Nassau, and I began to wonder. Was this resort going to be all it was cracked up to be? Ten minutes later, we arrived at the Compass Point Beach Resort.

When we drove up in front of Compass Point, there was a large concrete fence that seemed to surround the property. I had seen pictures of Compass Point's colorful huts in a TV commercial back in the States and thought, "what the heck?" I was really beginning to think I had made a mistake. Ah, but once I took a few steps past that fence and entered the Compass Point Beach Resort property, I was pleasantly surprised. I had entered a different world.

A Compass Point staff member gave me a colorful, cool, fruity Bahamian drink and a warm welcome to Nassau. Check-in at Compass Point was so easy I barely remember it. I walked down a winding path among the tropical greenery towards my room, and it was then that I began to see the charm of Compass Point.

The accommodations at Compass Point are colorful little huts (see pictures), each set off by itself. Some overlook the ocean; others sit up a little higher on the hill. All have great views of the ocean. I chose to stay in one of Compass Point's one-story sea front huts that sits right above the ocean - so close, in fact, that I could hear the ocean lapping at the sea wall as I sat on the porch or lay in bed each night.

The huts at Compass Point Beach Resort are brightly painted in Caribbean colors - red, blue, turquoise, yellow, pink, lavender, and orange. My hut had a turquoise roof trimmed in yellow and pink, with a balcony trimmed in royal blue, yellow, and lavender. The colors of Compass Point always delight my senses and put me in the mood for a playful vacation.

When I walked into my Compass Point hut, the first thing I noticed was the peaked roof inside that lent an airy feel to the room. The overhead fan was on, but it didn't need to be, because a breeze gently blew the curtains open and filled the room with fresh sea air. The queen sized bed was inviting after a long plane flight, but the colors of Compass Point energized me so much that I unpacked, changed, and went to the beach with my snorkel gear.

Compass Point also offers studio huts, sea view huts, and a great elevated sea front hut that has a king sized bed and a lower level patio equipped with a wet bar, picnic table and additional refrigerator. Weddings and honeymoons are common at Compass Point just because of such first-rate amenities.

When I arrived at Compass Point's private Love Beach, there was only one other person there. There's just nothing like the warm, crystal clear turquoise sea of the Caribbean. I slid into the warm sea and kicked along, looking at the white sandy bottom. On my swim I saw a reef, lots of fish, a starfish - and I literally almost ran into a huge grouper. There was certainly enough sea life around Compass Point to entertain me for hours.

Compass Point has its own restaurant and bar. They have a beautiful breakfast menu, lunch, snacks, and a full dinner menu plus wine list. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food at Compass Point was. One night I had grouper almondine and loved it.

One thing to note about Compass Point is that directly across the street is Compass Point Studios. The list of famous people who have recorded here is stunning - Bob Marley, the Stones, Snoop Dogg, Julian Lennon, Eric Clapton, Diana Ross, the Cure, Mariah Carey, Crash Test Dummies... Read the list on their site; you'll be surprised at the famous musicians and singers that have recorded just across the road from the Compass Point Beach Resort.

If and when I ever return to Nassau, the Bahamas, there is no question in my mind but that I will stay at the Compass Point Beach Resort. If you don't mind being a bit off the beaten path, if you love great food, a casual ambience, an uncrowded beach, and want to stay in some of the best accommodations on Nassau, I urge you to check out Compass Point Beach Resort in Nassau, the Bahamas.
