Colt McCoy Browns Starting QB: Are Cleveland's Quarterback Woes Over

Cleveland Has Finally Drafted the Right QB

Eric Mangini has announced that rookie quarterback Colt McCoy will start Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. He then went on to state that Colt would be the Browns starting quarterback for the rest of the 2010 season.

Congratulations, Cleveland Browns fans; you have a starting quarterback. I don't mean for just the 2011 season. Colt McCoy is the Cleveland Browns signal caller for the present and future. Quick, name that guy at quarterback for the Brownies in 2015. What do you know; it is Colt McCoy. Wait a minute. Wasn't he the starting quarterback for Cleveland at the end of 2011? That can't be possible. The Browns don't keep the same quarterback for that long. I would reckon they should've at least had six different starting QBs since then. Get excited Cleveland; Colt McCoy is making that a thing of the past.

Aren't we jumping the gun a bit?

McCoy has only played in four NFL games so far in his career. But let me ask Cleveland fans a question. Since the Browns have been back in Cleveland, have you ever seen a quarterback play four straight games and have felt this good about him? The reason everybody just said no, is because Colt McCoy has that "it" factor. He is a winner and can help his team even when he is having on off-throwing day.

McCoy is the fourth quarterback the Browns have drafted in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft since their return to the NFL. I guess that means the fourth time is the charm in the case of the Browns.

The three wasted draft picks before the Browns struck gold with Colt McCoy

Tim Couch - The year was 1999. Cleveland was in a frenzy of excitement. They were finally getting back their football team. With the first overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, the Browns picked the face of the franchise for the next decade. Just one problem; Tim Couch didn't have one good season while with the Browns. For anybody that thinks that statement is harsh, let me assure you that was the sugarcoated version. The harsh version is he didn't even have ten good games in his time with the Browns. In three and half seasons as the Browns starter, he threw 67 interceptions and only 64 touchdowns.

Charlie Frye - I was among the ones that thought Charlie Frye was a steal in the 3rd round of the 2005 NFL Draft. After one and a half seasons of being the Browns starting QB, Frye had a total of 14 touchdowns and 23 picks.

Brady Quinn - At least the Browns can say they didn't use their first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft to get Quinn. A lot of people say that Quinn never got enough of an opportunity to bud into a solid starting QB with the Browns. Notice, McCoy has only played four games so far. His receivers aren't any better than what Quinn had, yet I don't recall one game where Quinn ever looked as good as McCoy has been in any of the four games. Quinn could only dump the ball off, where as McCoy can make plays.
