Since 1970, the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts has sponsored a season-long celebration of cinema history. Each year beginning in early June and running through late July, CAPA offers film aficionados the opportunity to view classic films as they were meant to be seen - on the big screen, with an enthusiastic audience in attendance.
While moviegoers can expect to pay as much as $15 to see a new movie at their local multiplex these days, a single admission ticket to the entire 22 film CAPA Summer Movie Series starts at just $24, just a little over $1 dollar per cinematic classic.
To mark the event's 40th anniversary, CAPA has assembled a remarkable line-up for the summer of 2010. The series kicked off on Friday, June 6, with the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Rear Window, and continues with such diverse films as It Happened One Night, Singin' In The Rain, Rio Bravo, The Goonies, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Some Like It Hot, Carousel, All About Eve, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Double Indemnity, Patton, and The Omen. Also in the mix are several themed double features, including Fright Night Friday, Chick Flick Friday, Saturday Morning Cartoon Capers, and even a silent Buster Keaton double bill with live musical accompaniment. The event comes to a close on Sunday, July 25, with the Audrey Hepburn classic My Fair Lady.
In conjunction with the Summer Movie Series, CAPA will also be conducting three guided tours of the scenic Ohio Theatre, one of the state's most prestigious cultural attractions. Built in 1928 and declared an historic landmark in 1977, this lavish entertainment arena combines rich history and beautiful architecture to create a venue worthy of the timeless films on display inside. These free tours will be conducted on June 12, June 26, and July 10.
Tickets for the CAPA Summer Movie Series can be purchased online through Ticketmaster, or in person or by phone through the CAPA Ticket Office at the Ohio Theatre. Full details are available at the official CAPA website.
