Columbus Ohio to Host Second Annual Zombie Walk
On June 14th, Ohioans Beware...The ZOMBIES ARE COMING!
Columbus, OH 43215
United States of America
Well, actually it is more like several hundred fans of the zombie movie genre will pull out their Halloween makeup, fake blood, and torn clothes and meet up in Columbus's Goodale Park for an evening of good clean, although slightly demented, fun.
So what exactly is a Zombie Walk you might ask? According to www.wikipedia.org a Zombie Walk is "an organized public gathering of people who dress up in zombie costumes. Usually taking place in an urban center, the participants make their way around the city streets and through shopping malls in a somewhat orderly fashion and often limping their way towards a local cemetery or other public space. Promoted primarily through word of mouth and online message boards, zombie walks are an underground activity. During the event, participants are encouraged to remain in character as zombies and to communicate only in a manner consistent with zombie behavior. This may include grunting, groaning and slurred, moaning calls for 'brains'."
Befitting of the definition, after assembling at 3:00pm at Columbus's Goodale Park, these Ohioan "zombies" will walk through High Street, Fifth Street, through the convention center and back to Goodale Park -- all the while, moaning, limping, and freaking out any unsuspecting passerby.
Believe it or not, such Zombie Walks are not uncommon. Columbus is one of many cities across the globe that hosts a similar yearly event. From New York to California, Alabama to Washington, and Brazil to Iceland horror movie fans unite for a day of dress up and fellowship. All participating cities can be viewed and discussed using the forums available at www.zombiewalk.com.
For Columbus's walk this year, planners have decided to not only have fun with Halloween in June but also give back to their community. According to their website, http://www.myspace.com/zombiewalkcolumbus, the Columbus Zombie Walk can be summed up in three words: Cans, Corpses, Community. This is because Columbus Zombie Walk participants are encouraged to bring a canned good to the walk for donation to the Food Bank. The Food Bank will use the donated items to help underprivileged families in the Columbus area throughout the year.
Also available on the Columbus Zombie Walk website (www.myspace.com/zombiewalkcolumbus) are makeup tips and tricks as well as discussion boards and topics. Some of the recent blog posts on the site even link you to YouTube video tutorials giving simple step-by-step instructions on how to create realistic zombie bite wounds, corpse hands, aged dyed clothing, and fake blood.
Whether you are a zombie fan or just curious to witness such an event, the Columbus Zombie walk promises to be an interesting event. So dig out your camera or your fake blood and head to downtown Columbus on June 14th for an experience you won't soon forget.
