Columbus, Ohio Metro Parks: Winter Activities

The falling snow and frozen ponds and streams don't close the gates of the Columbus, Ohio Metro Parks. Dozens of activities are offered through the cold winter months at each of the Central Ohio parks.

Most of the winter activities at Columbus' Metro Parks are open to all but some programs do have limited capacity and require reservations. While there are several family programs that welcome all ages, there are no designated winter programs for toddlers only.

Metro Parks for Kids
Hunting for owls, nature crafts and feeding the birds are some of the activities for the 6 to 12 age group. Teens can learn winter photography tips or learn about the Underground Railroad.

Special events for preschoolers requiring registration (no charge). include Inniswood Gardens' "Preschool in the Garden: Evergreens". Parents of youth (6-12) can take advantage of the "Parents Night Out" program at Sharon Woods by preregistering.

The "Nature Detectives" program for home-school students at Sharon Woods is suitable for Youth or Teens and preregistration is required.

Metro Parks for Seniors
The over 50-crowd can enjoy activities with others their own age by looking for the Metro 50 designation on the activity schedule. Photography, crafts and workshops are available.

The senior exclusive "Beat the Winter Blues" at Sharon Woods is limited to 50 participants and requires registration.

Metro Parks Winter Hikes
Organized hikes are planned at 13 of the area's parks beginning in January. The Winter Hikes are open to any age group and range from one to six miles throughout the park.

Metro Parks Adults Only
While most of the activities at the Columbus-area Metro Parks are for the entire family, there are a few hikes that are just for the grownups. Battelle Darby Creek, Slate Run and Sharon Woods offer adults-only hikes including one for black and white photography.
