Comcast Blocks Access to MagicJack

Hooray for a Workaround!

Annie Jean Brewer
Comcast customers who use the MagicJack phone service got a rude awakening this morning when trying to use their MagicJack service. The MagicJack device would no longer to connect to the internet and web access to the MagicJack website was blocked, though all other websites worked perfectly. Even attempting to contact the site via a proxy server resulted in an internet connection error, despite the fact that website checkers verified that the MagicJack site was live.

I contacted the MagicJack website through a non-Comcast subscribing friend and was notified by Darene of Customer Support that Comcast has blocked the MagicJack service. She did provide a workaround for the issue. Users who are affected by the Comcast block can click this link to download a workaround program that users in foreign countries have to sometimes employ. It will install a program on your computer that bypasses Comcast's unethical blocks.

We all knew that the big corporations would begin this war to prevent users from having reasonably-priced phone service and we have a choice: we can bow down and be forced to pay outrageous prices or we can fight back.

I say we fight back.

If you or a friend have been affected by a block of the MagicJack website and service you will still be able to access this page as well as the link to the workaround. It is not a perfect solution, but your phone will make and receive phone calls.

Comcast thought they pulled a fast one by even blocking access to the MagicJack website so that users would not be able to contact Customer Support, but they can't stop everyone's access to the website because they are not a monopoly yet. Please pass this link to all of your friends so that they will have this in the event that other internet providers attempt this unethical block of the MagicJack service.

Much thanks to my sister Kelli who contacted MagicJack to get the workaround.

I complained to Comcast and of course they denied the block. Strangely enough, after I complained and wrote this article my Magicjack started working again and I received an email from Comcast Mark apologizing for the inconvenience.

Anyway, I am now on Time Warner. No MagicJack issues here at all.

I do not think that what Comcast is doing is legal since they are breaching the anitrust Law.
A Class action of several millions would make them think twice and may get a court order to stop this practice.

I too had problems getting on magicjack and its web sites. The tech people at MJ tryed to help me but they never said anything about comcast. I want to download this fix and see what happens. I know the big phone companys are up to something. I used to pay $10.00 a month in phones taxs and the phone service was only 15.00. that is why I went to MJ for a year and had no problems until my old PC went and couldn't get online and got a new one and my MJ did not work. I took to my dads house with vierzon internet and it worked there. Knowing vierzon they will do it soon also.

I was a little ticked off when my mj would not work this morning.. and when I couldn't even access their website I know something was fishy, cause all of my other pages loaded fine! Google Voice still worked so I called my sister (not a Comcast subscriber) and had her relay the chat through Yahoo on her computer. Was a pain, but at least I found out the issue and the fix.

You know me, I won't tolerate it so workaround here I come!
