On the first radio appearance since winning her Academy Award, Mo'Nique called into "The Steve Harvey Morning Show" in Chicago on March 8 to talk about the significance of wearing a gardenia like Hattie McDaniel.
"I own the rights to the Hattie McDaniel story," said Mo'Nique to Chicago's V103 (102.7) listeners, after confirming that the flower was worn as a tribute. Mo'Nique was familiar with Hattie McDaniel's story approximately seven years before the awards ceremony.
The flower in her hair was just like the flower on the right-hand side of Hattie McDaniel's dress as she sat in the Academy Award's black section to receive her award as Best Supporting Actress. When the Jan. 25, 2006, U.S. Black Heritage postage stamp released, Hattie McDaniel wore a blue dress, the same dress she wore on her Oscar-winning night. Mo'Nique wore a blue dress, too.
Mo'Nique also said that she heard Hattie McDaniel's voice when her name was called as Best Supporting Actress for the movie "Precious." Although the hosts of "The Steve Harvey Morning Show" cracked jokes about Mo'Nique hearing things, they all congratulated her for her award. Steve Harvey warned Mo'Nique about letting her talk show audience touch the Oscar and get fingerprints all over it, but he boasted about how his friend won an Oscar.
On Thursday, March 11, Mo'Nique will return to her talk show, "The Mo'Nique Show," with notable guests, Oscar nominee Taraji Henson, Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose and Oscar-winning rappers Three Six Mafia.
