Comedian Robert Schimmel Arrested on Felony Domestic Violence Charges
Hey Schimmel: Domestic Violence Isn't Funny!
Schimmel's wife, Melissa, is half his age (Schimmel is 59), and she is his second wife. According to the New York Daily News, Schimmel divorced his first wife Vicki three times, then he married his daughter's friend Melissa when his cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, went into remission.
Is Robert Schimmel following Chris Brown's example?
Sadly, this is not the first case of celebrity domestic violence. According to Fox News, in February, Chris Brown surrendered to police and was charged with felony in connection with a domestic violence incidence against his girlfriend, Rihanna, just hours before they were both scheduled to perform at the Grammys. Brown, like Schimmel, was held on $50,000 bail.
Associated Content's Nina Rotz reported Chris Brown pleaded not guilty to charges of felony assault and making criminal threats in his first appearance in court on March 5.
Actress Keira Knightley helps put domestic violence in the spotlight
Last week, Keira Knightley's domestic violence public service announcement was censored for violence. The video depicts Knightley being thrown to the floor, her hair pulled, and then savagely kicked repeatedly in the stomach as she cowers from her attacker. The video can be seen on YouTube here.
This commercial was released by the UK charity Women's Aid, and British television censors the PSA, called 'Cut', was not suitable for television due to its violence.
After watching the video and reading the comments on YouTube, it's apparent that domestic violence victims agree with the 'shock value' of Knightley's commercial. As one person said in a comment on YouTube, "It was very shocking and smartly done, and I can see why parents wouldn't want their children seeing it, but banning it!? ... I say the world needs less bubble wrapped campaigns and more campaigns that show what goes on behind close doors!"
Perhaps if Robert Schimmel had viewed Knightley's commercial, the argument between he and his young wife wouldn't have turned to violence.

Post a CommentDomestic violence can have a terrible effect on children; I know because I grew up in a stormy, violent home. Thanks for keeping us informed. Maybe if we take this monster out of the darks, it will be less common. Thanks.
Great report waiting for the update - :)
I didn't say he was convicted of it. At the time this was written, there were no reports anywhere of his injuries or what caused the altercation.
Wow - you're certainly making assumptions. Robert was arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse, not convicted of it. No mention of the injuries he sustained in the beating she gave him or what caused the altercation.
Good reporting on a terrible situation :-(
Excellent reporting on a tough topic.
Very sad...Good report, Heather.
Good report, sad story.
I hadn't heard of this. So many people I've worked with (as a volunteer, homeless shelter) have been affected by domestic abuse.
