Comedy Brings a New Diet Revolution

Simple and yet Profound Comedy Gives New Diet Idea

David Lindberg
As most people who have been trying to lose weight most of their lives know, thinking about dieting is something that occurs just about every hour of the waking day. There are so many experts and types of diets that it is literally exhausting hearing about them. Actually, the only diets that are at least interesting to hear about are the "miracles" that promise eat whatever you want and just take this pill and lose while you sleep. We all know that they don't work, but they sound great! As soon as a lifelong dieter hears, "eat healthy and exercise" we change the channel. We know that! We have been trying that every day.

I know from my own experience that I have thought that I was so overweight since I was young, and yet when I look at old photographs of when I was very young, I realize that I wasn't hardly heavy at all. It all really comes down to one's opinion of yourself relative to others around you, unless you are morbidly obese, which, by the way, is a horrible sounding phrase for anyone to hear.

Some of the most hilarious memories of the subject "dieting" come to mind as I remember comedians that made movies or brought the subject to their hit TV show. First, Jackie Gleason comes to mind. He had many reference jokes thrown at him about his weight, using humor to deal with his issues of dieting. Another great was Dom DeLuise who starred in the movie "Fatso". If you have never seen it, rent it. The binge scene will have you laughing to tears. In the movie, Dom has a life long issue with gaining weight, even though in this movie, he was actually not that heavy at all!

My most recent attempt at dieting is to not concentrate so much on the word "diet" but on eating properly...and the word LESS!

There is a great scene from the movie "Analyze This" with Robert De Niro, who is a Mafia type boss. One of the funniest lines and yet, one of the most profound ideas I have ever heard about dieting was said by one character in the movie. In this small, mostly unnoticed scene, one crook says, "I'm hungry. What kind of sandwich is a not too fattening?" To which the reply comes, "Half a sandwich!" Is that profound or what?

That is now my new diet program and I call it HALFA. When people see a term such as this, they assume that it has some acronym meaning, but in this case, it just means, eat "HALF-A" sandwich, or simply "EAT LESS". What I am trying to do now is eat the same things that I have been, which are mostly healthy foods, but eat HALF the amount I would usually take. If I would want a sandwich, of any kind, now I cut or make HALFA sandwich. If I would fill a plate with dinner food items, now I fill HALFA plate.

Give it a try, but you heard the term here first..."HALFA" and good luck...you'll need it!
