Comet Bathroom Cleaner with Disinfectant Versus Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner

Thea Mann
I am not a clean freak by an means and want to spend as little time as possible cleaning the bathroom. Recently I switched from Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner to Comet Bathroom Cleaner with Disinfectant because I've always had good luck with Comet. The Lysol product was not performing up to my standards.

Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner says it is a no scrubbing required cleanser. It comes in a spray form, which is handy, and that it also disinfects as it cleans. There is a matching product which tackles mold and mildew. The cleaner has a strong, somewhat unpleasant smell which usually would drive me out of the bathroom until it had aired out a little. While this is not an entirely bad thing, if I was trying to do a quick get-in-get-out clean, I would have to hold my breath. The smell left behind is still quite strong and not entirely pleasant. The Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner leaves an institutional smell which reminds me of a high school bathroom.

Once the Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner was sprayed onto the surface I found that if I didn't scrub I would have little lines running down the walls of my shower indicating exactly where the Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner had been sprayed. I also found it didn't do a great job on the mildew and mold that had built up in the crevices of the bathtub enclosure. Once I tried scrubbing at the mildew after using the Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner but the grout and sealer started coming off. This could have been the result of a poor job of tub installation, but I still had mold and mildew growing in my shower!

I considered trying the other Lysol product specifically designed for mold and mildew, but I really didn't like the idea of have a cupboard full of cleaning supplies. Instead I started looking around for a new bathroom cleaner.

Comet Bathroom Cleaner with Disinfectant offered a coupon in my daily paper one week so I decided to give it a shot. It is a little bit more expensive than the Lysol product, but within two uses of the Comet Bathroom Cleaner with Disinfectant I felt like I had a whole new shower and tub. Even the day when I left the Comet on my shower for the whole day (I had to run out unexpectedly) there were no streaks or product residue left behind. Given that I have two children, I find the fact that I can leave it without coming back to an even bigger mess very nice.

The smell is a little strong but is not overpowering like the Lysol. It leaves a clean, almost springy smell in the bathroom. This means I can stay in the bathroom while I let the Comet settle in. Generally I can simply spray down the walls and tub while tougher stains, like tub paints for the kids or bits of really stubborn soap scum, might require a couple of swipes with a sponge. The fixtures in my bathroom really sparkle after a quick wipe down, unlike the Lysol which left a dulling film on the stainless. The mold and mildew are completely gone from my tub as well.

I love that the Comet Bathroom Cleaner with Disinfectant is one single product that I can use to clean every surface in my bathroom except the mirror. I've even used it in a pinch on my kitchen floor! I will never go back to the Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner; Comet Bathroom Cleaner with Disinfectant is a real powerhouse and makes the chore a whole lot easier.

  • Lysol is cheaper than Comet, but not by much, and not at all if you have to use 2 different products
  • Lysol left streaks if I didn't wipe it away quickly, Comet never leaves streaks.
  • Lysol has an unpleasant and overwhelming smell.
