Comfort

Sick on Christmas Eve

I'm afraid I do not know a lot of comforting places, here on campus (Appalachian State University) or even at home. I can recall a time where I was the most comfortable and surprisingly it was during a moment where I was the most uncomfortable! When I was younger I fell ill Christmas Eve. I was too sick to walk securely on my own. We were at my grandmother's house for the holiday and I caught the stomach flu. It was a bad winter that year in Detroit, MI. My mother walked me into the living room to one of the twin rocking comforting arm chairs in the morning. I sat there in front of the television watching Christmas Specials/Marathons gulping down Pepto Bismal with a bucket nearby. The bathroom was 5 ft away and the kitchen 6 ft away. All I smelled was a mixture of medicine and food so delicious it'll (insert wise crack here). It was then I started to doze off periodically. As a kid time went by slowly so I felt miserable forever.

As it got darker and as I stopped throwing up and the food was coming together nicely, my mom came in to check on me. She gave me a fresh baked chocolate chip Toll House cookie and some hot chocolate from Swiss Colony. She turned off the lights and turned on the Christmas tree lights and all the other electronic devices that needed turning on. I was practically laying in the sit up chair thanks to the foot support. I was wrapped in my warm race car covers. The only thing I could think about was Christmas gifts and that I hope I'll feel better tomorrow. School was the furthest from my mind! I laid there in a dimly lit room full of living room furniture, a decorated gold and silver Christmas tree, and many other Christmas decorations. I was sick but I never felt so comfortable. This is my idea of warmth, my idea of comfort.
