In general you will want to wear light weight, wrinkle resistant clothing made of natural, breathable fibers. Try blends of cotton or washable linen or silk but whatever you choose it should be wash and wear and comfortable.
Consider a dress. Traveling in a casual dress is a great way to enjoy the open road and this year the styles filling the racks of retail shopping are great for a road trip. The styles are loose fitting, flowing and longer than last year. Most people will not be the most comfortable driving in a mini skirt but this year's maxi dresses and casual goddess styles are fabulous!
Dress in layers. Tried and true this advice is essential. Summer travel can change from scorching hot to downright chilly between pit stops. Besides the outdoor weather few road trips don't include stops at chilly air conditioned restaurants. By dressing in layers you have a little control to change.
Pick Capris. If a dress is not your style go for a pair of capris like Old Navy's Mid-Rise Linen-Blend Cargo Capris. A nice pair of capris will take you anywhere and be stylish. Shorts have a few disadvantages to capris in both style and function. Capris are much more versatile. If the air conditioning is blowing on your legs or the sun is beating through the window shorts leave your legs exposed and most people do not feel cooler in shorts. Protect your legs and you will be ready for any temperature. If it cools down a sweater and capris will usually be fine in any season other than winter.
Be sure that your travel clothes fit. Don't laugh and shake your head. Take a look around any travel stop and you will see countless people wearing clothes that are too tight or too big. If your clothes are tight you will obviously be uncomfortable but also consider this. If you look frumpy you will feel frumpy and clothes that are too big usually look frumpy. Instead of buying one size too big look for clothing styles that are looser fitting and relaxed. Consider stretchable materials that include a bit of spandex blended with a natural fabric like cotton.
Save the buttons for your sweater or windbreaker. Button down shirts are best left at home. Unless your a guy who just doesn't feel right in anything but a Hawaiian shirt. If you want a collar try a polo shirt but pullover tops are best for traveling. Buttons can break, pop off or get caught and who wants to spend their road trip reattaching a button? There are a plethora of simple pullover short sleeves shirts to choose from. Look for solid color tops that feel good or buy new clothes along the way picking up souvenir shirts from the places you visit!
Wear sandals bring sneakers. On any road trip you will need two pairs of shoes. Most people like to wear sandals or another style of comfortable shoes that do not require socks but you really need to have a pair tennis shoes or sneakers with socks in your easily accessible travel bag. Part of the enjoyment of a road tip is that unexpected adventure you find along the way and some of those adventures will involve walking distances or on surfaces that are better suited for sneakers.
The last good advice about clothes for the comfortable road trip is to travel with fewer items that are all interchangeable, stain resistant and can be washed in a rest stop sink if need be. Don't forget your light weight windbreaker in case the weather turns but if you dress in comfortable layers that fit properly you will look back at happy memories and think "what a great time" instead of cursing the longest 12 hours of your life.
