Comic Book Movies that Should Be Made

Bob McCoog
Summer is the time of blockbuster movies, and for the past few years these blockbuster movies have involved turning comic books into reality. Some of these creations have made fanboys like myself either giggle like a school girl, seeing our favorite character on screen, or cringe in horror because of how our favorite character is portrayed on screen. (The first Incredible Hulk movie is a prime example of this, in my opinion.)

However, now that all the main stream characters have been brought to life (and in the case of Spiderman, resurrected into a different form), I feel that it's time to give some recognition to some of the lesser known comic book heroes.

The Sandman- Not to be confused with the Spiderman villain of the same name, this Sandman is the ruler of the Dreaming, where we all go when we sleep. Along with his other siblings, such as Death, Delirium, and Destiny, they make up the group of powerful beings known as the Endless. This amazing comic book series, written by Neil Gaiman, would delight many of the 30's crowd of comic book geeks. Alan Rickman is tall, lean, and eccentric enough to pull off Morpheus and make a movie like this a success.

Hellblazer- Yes, I know this was already made into a movie. However, John Constantine was British in the comic books, and I feel should be British in the movie. I do want to give a special thank you to Keanu Reeves for not attempting a British accent however. If he did, I would have to seriously reconsider the state of Hollywood today. As a replacement for Constantine in the remake, Tim Roth has the right level of seriousness and dry humor to bring John to life.

The Books of Magic- The story of a young man finding himself and learning of the great powers that are in store for him has the perfect makings of Summer blockbuster. Through in various magical beings from both sides of the spectrum attempting to either kill or help defend young Tim Hunter, and I would forsee an entire movie saga, bringing in the big bucks for Hollywood for a few years. Sadly though, I don't know if there is an actor able to pull off Tim on the silver screen, so this one may just have to wait.

Dhampire- A rather well written one shot story from the late 1990's, this comic book tells the story of a young man trying to find his identity in the world as he deals with having recently been turned into a vampire. Teenage angst sells. Vampires (ranging from the greatness of Angel and Spike, to the whimpy emo-ness of Edward Cullen) obviously sell. Combine the two together, and Hollywood would be a fool not to pick this one up. The storyline may not be worthy of a summer blockbuster title, but I could see this one as a winter time favorite. Miles Heiser, who plays Drew on the television show 'Parenthood', would be a perfect fit for this movie. He already portrays the teenage angst, confusion, and self-doubt. All he needs is to be taught how to hiss and suck blood from peoples necks, and he should be good to go for this movie.

So, remember, as you go to the theater this summer to watch Robert Downey Jr. blow things up, think of the lesser known comic book characters out there. These poor, struggling souls are waiting for their break to make it to the box office. So please, show them a little love, and write Hollywood to let them know that these characters are out there and that they're waiting.
