Comic Book Review: Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO #1-3

Hitchcock's Classic in the Four Color World!

Kevin L. Powers
Every once in a while I like to take a look back at a comic book classic, or at least one that represents a classic. This time around I got my hands on a copy of Innovations three-issue adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. The book itself is beautifully painted and adapted by Felipe Echevarria with script assists by Matt Thompson and calligraphy by Vicki Williams.

The book is an authentic adaptation of the film with the exception that it is in color, which is one of the book's many assets. It fully recreates many of the films iconic shots and sequences and even the sounds and noises that has made PSYCHO one of Hitchcock's most recognizable films. Echevarria's rich and lush style of painting is both shocking and elegant at the same time.

Innovation, in its hay day, was one of the primary publishers that produced adaptations of films and books. They were the first to bring CHILD'S PLAY, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, QUANTUM LEAP, LOST IN SPACE, and many more, to the four colored world. They also produced adaptations of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, Anne Rice's Vampire Lestat series (THE VAMPIRE LESTAT, INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, & QUEEN OF THE DAMNED) as well as her THE MUMMY and THE MASTER OF RAMPLING GATE, among many other titles.

PSYCHO is one of the company's best adapted series and even though there is very little diversion from the original source material and film, Echevarria does a great job of keeping the story suspenseful and entertaining. There is no wasted space in this comic book. Originally published in 1992, this title is a gem to find and worth every penny especially when you add in the bonus of Echevarria's painting of the Master of Suspense himself which opens every issue.

Thanks again...I didn't have much trouble adapting the film to comics. I believe it was due to the simple and direct storytelling Hitchcock always employed. The story and characters always came first in his work, which is more than I can say for many horror films today...

I was pleasantly surprised to have come across the adaptation being as PSYCHO is one of my all time favorite films. I was even more surprised at how your artwork effortlessly (to my eyes that is) translated the film to the comic book page. It was though the material was made for the comic book page.

Kevin, thanks for the review! (and for including comics/graphic novels) in your film review blog).
