The following ideas for superhero cakes are a spin-off on the traditional princess cake. For the majority of these cakes, you'll need various pans, such as a domed cake pan and circle pan, two deep rectangular pans or two banana bread pans, frosting, gel icing, food coloring and the action hero.
Birthday Cake Idea: Spiderman Cake
Spiderman swings through the city saving everyday citizens and taking down villains. For this birthday cake, create a large brick building. Then place your Spiderman action figure on top of the building or stuck halfway into the side. Pour the cake batter into two deep rectangular pans. Stack the rectangles, frost in reddish brown, then use the gel icing to design brick detail and windows. Stick Spiderman on top and bend him forward so that it appears that he is crawling. Or simply stick him into the side.
Birthday Cake Idea: Iron Man Cake
When Tony Stark dons his powered armor he becomes Iron Man, the superhero who flies around the globe taking down bad guys. For this birthday cake, have Iron Man shoot out of an explosion. Pour the cake batter into a domed cake pan and two circular pans. Once cooked, shave down the dome, and then place it on top of the circular cakes. Use gray frosting as 'smoke' along the bottom of the cake, then use red and orange icing on the mound to create a mushroom explosion. Place Iron Man at the top, with his hands up, flying out of the explosion.
Birthday Cake Idea: Mr. Fantastic
After being struck by cosmic rays, Mr. Fantastic gains the power of elasticity. For this birthday cake, have him wrap his legs around a school bus. For this birthday cake, pour batter into two banana cake pans. Once cooked, stack, and then use yellow frosting and black gel icing to design the bus. Stick Mr. Fantastic about halfway into the top, and then draw his legs to wrap around the bus.
Birthday Cake Idea: Superman
Superman is an alien with an emotional attachment to humans. He can also freely glide in and out of earth's atmosphere. For this birthday cake, have him coming out of an Earth cake. For the cake, pour batter into a domed cake pan and two circular pans. Once cooked, place the domed cake on top of the other cakes, and frost in blue, white and green, recreating the top half of earth. Place Superman on top, flying away from earth.
