Coming or Going

RipDiction
Everything appears to be ripping apart at the seams. The very fiber of the planet itself tearing under the stress the anxiety of pent up frustration bursting to the surface. The past March we found ourselves focused on yet another crisis this latest in Japan. An 8.9 on the Richter scale earthquake devastating the Miyagi Prefecture and much of the country on March 27, 2011. Nuclear power plants damaged, food and water quickly becoming scarce, the people of Japan woke on the morning of March 27th to terror like never before.

Memories since that horrible beginning to yet another day have since began to surface due to the looming nuclear threat at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant. Radiation fears, for reasons stemming from the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, have escalated since the quake and proceeding tsunami with high radiation levels emitting from the plant.

MSNBC news reported Tuesday; April 5, 2011 that, "Millions of times the legal limit" of radiation is being dumped into the sea. The report goes on to further say, "Many of the evacuated residents may never be able to return home".

These current events all too often tend to validate remarks made even by the layman and potentially not completely "in the know" about certain aspects of the planet, the people, the nature of things. It is intriguing however, to find that things written come to pass as truthful reality. The benefits never outweigh the risks and this is another illustration of the truth within that statement.

In 2010 the Gulf Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico was a wake up call toward the potential catastrophic consequences of tampering with the natural balance of the environment. The ideology is that we as the human race were only meant to progress to a certain degree. There are many extremely dangerous practices within our lives that have well known adverse consequences and yet they continue to dabble anyway.

Popular Mechanics reports that the 10 biggest oil spills in history have occurred from 1991 to 2011. The article reports that, "240 to 336 million gallons" of oil were spilled during the Gulf War. 1,410.2 to 1,506.2 million gallons of oil has been spilled on land or in the ocean over the last two (2) decades. These are slightly more than startling numbers. The environmental impact hidden or not has to be devastated by this irresponsibility toward the eco-system of the planet.

So, the only obvious question with a reality check partially illustrated above is are we post-mortem virtually as we speak or are we coming into a new age? Safer and more efficient in our ways and set to avoid rather than create? Are we coming or going?

Good question. Will we be wise enough to save ourselves and the planet, or will greed and apathy be our downfall?
