Coming Home in August

A Summer Poem

Tara M. Clapper
Coming home in August
To a lazy summer afternoon,
Made to sacrifice the ocean breeze
For school bag selection and sneezing.

The chirping cicadas
And grass overgrown by my swing set:
When four weeks seemed like four years.

But there were toys I hadn't taken
And more to do on rainy days
While the water reminded me
Of constant pressure
Moving down that hilly street
To carefully evade lightning's strike.
