Coming Soon: Remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street

Ashley Hargrove
In the past few years there has been the trend to remake an 1980s horror flicks: from "Halloween" to "Friday the 13th." So, of course, why wouldn't they pass up remaking "A Nightmare on Elm Street?" However can this movie live up to the hyped-up potential it has been given?

For the first remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," music video director Samuel Bayer teams up with Warner Brothers (New Line) to lead the film. Eric Heisserer and Wesley Strick ("Wolf," "Cape Fear") work together to write the gory script.

As like the original, Freddy is burned by several parents, accused of what he has done to children. In this film, however, he is portrayed as an innocent gardener, with a bit of a pedophile in him. Although Jackie Earle Haley ("Watchmen"), an up and coming actor is cast as Freddy Krueger, many believe that he can't live up to the role once filled eight times by Robert Englund. He is not only shorter, but seems to timid for the role, despite his face being a bit more gruesomely scarred than the original. Nancy is played by Roney Mara (small bit from "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary"). This time, Nancy is more of an a Gothic outcast. A few others (not very well known) cast in the film are Thomas Dekker and Kyle Gallner.

Although the plot follows most of the original, it is lacking the much needed creativity of Wes Craven and Robert Englund. Many of the scenes that are re-used in this film are a bit more gory. Also, there is a high chance of much more nudity than the first time, considering that Platinum Dunes (the company known for outlandish, gory movie remakes) is working on this film.

The film has had a few petitions against it, many "Nightmare" fans claiming that the film can't be made without Wes Craven or Robert Englund (although it is rumored that Englund has a cameo in it). Basically, this film was made to try to score an opening weekend like the latest "Halloween," just enough to spawn of a sequel.

After watching several trailers, I just couldn't really get myself into it, despite being "A Nightmare on Elm Street" fan. To watch some of the trailers, go to http://imdb.com/title//tt1179056/. Maybe, just maybe, the film will actually turn out to be somewhat good. My curiosity is still getting the best of me, just to see what the film is like without Robert Englund in his infamous role of Freddy Krueger. This rated R film is set to be released either April 26th or April 30th of 2010.
