Comment Spam, Can AC Stop It?

Vulgar and Inapproriate Comments Aren't Fun!

Louisa Burgess
I was browsing AC the other night thinking I would read some "popular content " and perhaps learn something. When I got to my second "popular" article, I read it and was impressed, good topic, nice writing style and so forth. I decided to scroll down and leave a comment after rating the article. I cannot tell you how dismayed and disappointed I became!

Six full pages of nasty, degrading and totally inappropriate comments! I would tell you the name of the article but I don't want to embarrass the author or give anymore teenagers or immature people the opportunity to add more damage. To further add insult to injury, the rating on the article was down to 2. something! There was no reason behind that, only meanness.

There was no reason to insult the author or talk about sex in comments about the article. The article was clearly written for a certain audience and was concise and well done. I felt and still feel terribly for the person who wrote it; I wish there was something that could be done about this. I doubt highly that this one and only article has been affected by "toilet graffiti" in this way.

My suggestion to the author is to contact AC and ask for the comments to be removed. I am also going to email AC and report this. I sincerely hope that if you find something like this you will report it too. What can be done to prevent this I have no idea but perhaps if we let the administrators know that we find it offensive they will try to monitor comments or at least pay attention to situations like this. I am glad this situation didn't result in the writer leaving AC, she has since written very nice articles without that result.

You can delete comments on your own articles.. but your right, one should contact AC administration to make them aware of the situation. Great article!

Bless your heart, hon, negative comments are horrible! I've been fighting against them for a while too!

Gosh..this is really horrible !!...I have had a few comments on mine and have heard others complaining...really immatured for people to leave comments in hiding..they should at least be brave enough to state who they are !

It would have been far more effective for you to post this in the forums instead of write an article about it because you are misinformed. CP's can delete comments on their work and now on their CP page. If you run across this in the future, simply PM the CP to let them know and then it's up to them to do something about it.

Excellent writing Louisa! Being a poet, I don't see this very often, but it happens. I also noticed that the more popular that a writer gets, the more likely that they will attract these trolls..especially if they are unfortunate enough to have an article that is in the "most commented" section.

AC doesn't censor the comments..the producer does..which is a good thing..I rather have the discretion of deleting what I deem inappropriate. AC in my opinion, doesn't have a good track record in responding to certain issues..including technical ones..I don't know if we should trust them with censoring our readers. I delete porn & racist comments & leave everything else..I don't wan't comments to be confused by censor filters, however. Such as medical terms or like sounding words. Good exploration here, Louisa.

If you are an AC content producer who receives these kinds of inappropriate comments, you can delete them yourself. I bleieve that you can click on the comment and delete it.

I agree with you and appreciate this article.

Wow! I think more of the comments and the "blog" or forum section needs monitoring. Actually so does the e-mail. I'm getting spam already!
