Commentary on the Most Annoying Ads on TV

Sherrill Fulghum
These days it seems that nearly all of the ads on the television are annoying. Some are just more annoying than others.

It's bad enough that practically all of them insult your intelligence, but why do they have to yell at us as well? Do the people who write these things really think that the television watching public is really that stupid? Or is it the adverting agency writers are really that stupid and just don't know any better

For example; that bearded guy who does the Oxy products commercials. He yells the entire commercial. Yelling isn't going to help get the message across any better. If hearing his is that difficult then he needs to have the sound man fix his microphone. And now he's doing ads for one of the sports netwroks.

Then there's those car salesmen, especially the local ones. Again they must think we are all idiots. Some guy doesn't have enough money to pay his rent, but the car salesman guarantees he can get you the credit for a car? PLLLEEEEEAAAAASSSSSSSSEEEE! Give me a break. I love the ones where they advertise a car for ONLY $499 per month. That's more than a lot of people's rent!

And then there's the lawyers who want you to believe that they can make you a millionaire. A few years ago there was a major law firm in the area who was in legal trouble itself. One of the partners the firm is named for was censored and not allowed to practice for one year. There were also some major questions as to the validity of their claims on their commercials. The partner is back and the commercials have not changed. They are still making the same claims. Not only is that annoying, it isn't very responsible.

There was one lawyer who used to yell about how he could get you a lot of money from a drunk driver. I'm glad I don't live in that area any more. He wasn't just annoying; he was obnoxious to boot.

Then we come to the Geico car insurance commercials. They have gone from bad to worse. When Joan Rivers shows up I mute the TV. That one is VERY annoying. But I will have to admit that I like the one with the guy who makes all the sound effects. He's actually funny.

And what about all of those drug commercials? We are already a nation fastly approaching obesity en masse, but the drug manufacturers want to make us all designer drug dependent hypochondriacs on top of it all.

Television has gotten rather annoying in general and the commercials especially so. There are days when I wonder how the networks are still in business.

I am getting so sick of watching television, because all we have now is a box full of ads that we pay for monthly, and oh yes...we get a LITTLE bit of programming along with the commercial! When are the companies who pay to put these ads on going to realize that they are ANNOYING us more than anything? And the ads are always LOUDER than the programming! News flash to Time Warner (0ne of the biggest cuplrits) and all the other companies who think we actually CARE about their stupid ads. GO AWAY AND NEVER COME BACK!!! CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW???
