Signs of skin problems in dogs
Some of the major signs of skin problems in dogs include but are not limited to dry flaky skin, excessive scratching, black dead skin, hard thick skin, hair falling out, read skin, rashes, blotchy skin, and biting and chewing.
If you notice that your dog has any of these issues, it may be due to skin problems or an allergy.
Common causes of skin problems in dogs
Above are some of the signs of skin problems in dogs, now we'll take a look at some of the causes of skin problems in dogs.
Fleas
Fleas are one of the major culprits of skin problems in dogs. Many dogs are allergic to fleas. The bites are painful and itchy, and having fleas crawling all over them is extremely uncomfortable. If your dog has a flea infestation, you might notice them chewing and scratching a lot, and even losing hair.
Food
Food can cause major skin problems in dogs. Many dog foods have ingredients in them that are not good for dogs, and that some dogs are allergic to. Avoid purchasing really cheap low quality dog foods to reduce the likelihood of your dog developing a skin problem or food allergy. Also, feeding dogs table scraps can cause skin problems.
Bathing
Using cheap dog shampoos can cause skin problems. Many of these shampoos dry the skin and cause irritation and itching. Try using a dog shampoo that is made with natural ingredients such as oatmeal or purchasing a shampoo from your local veterinary clinic.
Bathing dogs with hot water can also cause skin irritation. Bathe dogs in water that is cool, but not cold. This is the best way to avoid irritation and resulting skin problems in dogs.
Lack of bathing
If you don't bathe your dog enough it can cause skin problems. This is especially true if the dog stays outside. Dogs roll around in dirt and other things that get all over their skin. If they aren't bathed regularly these things can cause lots of skin problems. A dog should be bathed at least once a month.
Allergies
When you see signs of a skin problem it could be due to allergies. Some allergies are caused by food or fleas, but sometimes it could be more serious and may require allergy injections to keep the skin allergy under control.
Talk to your local veterinarian about what could be causing skin problems in your dog and they'll be able to help you come up with the best options and form of treatment.
