Stress is an increasing and common problem today. It affects many differently with emotional and physical consequences. There are many definitions of stress, however, we commonly think of stress as a psychological disorder only, not realizing that stress can take on many forms. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, "stress" means "physical, chemical, or an emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in causing disease." So clearly, stress affects more than just our mental state.

Life Altering Changes

Change is a part of life and there is no way to avoid it. Adaptation is a major stressor and comes in different forms. Marriage, divorce, occupation, and family come with many challenges and transformation is essential to avoid major stress. Although, change may have benefits it is still stressful. It is important to realize that while something may be for the good there are still emotional and physical consequences. Accepting change and identifying it is the best way of reducing the levels of stress that accompanies it.

Health Concerns

Wellness is an integral part of our community today, so when illness strikes it is devastating, therefore causing high levels of stress. Being healthy allows the ability to continue working and socializing and without these components in our daily lives, it leads to stress. These types of stress factors will then cause emotional and physical harm potentially leading to a disastrous outcome. Being proactive is the best form of health maintenance in keeping our brains fit.

Feelings of Guilt and Helplessness

Emotions that are beyond our control can actually lead to higher stress levels than other stressors in our lives. Things that cannot be changed in our lives can lead to a feeling of helplessness and guilt. The inability of having a choice will only lead to stress and accompanying that will be the feeling of helplessness and vulnerability. The brain is a very powerful organ and can alter many behaviors in our bodies so being in tune to what our bodies feel may be helpful in identifying and reducing some of the stressor that are being felt.

Not all Stress is Bad

Stress is a part of life and comes in various forms. It may be good or bad, and influences everyone differently. Although we may be able to overcome many of the day-to-day stressors, it is important to realize and learn how to control them. We have to identify the causes of stress and quickly intervene to turn that stress into positive energy rather than making it all negative.
