Common Household Dangers for Dogs

Amanda R
If you have a dog, you know that he will eat just about anything right? There are many common 'people" foods, plants, and other household dangers that can be harmful to your dog. Some are very common, such as chocolate. Others, like daffodils or tulips, you may be unaware of. Here are some common dog favorites that are not dog friendly.

Chocolate is dangerous to dogs due to the cocoa it contains. Cocoa will poison a dog. It can lead to seizures, coma, and even death. Keep in mind though that because white chocolate contains no cocoa, it can be given to your dog as an occasional treat.

Coffee, tea, and anything which contains caffeine should also be kept away from dogs. They pose the same danger to dogs as chocolate.

Grapes and raisins are a newer discovery in dangers to dogs. They are now known to cause kidney problems that can lead to kidney failure and even death. Dogs should never be fed grapes or raisins because even a small amount can harm them.

Macadamia nuts and walnuts can cause paralysis in dogs. Others varieties of nuts have been known to cause more minor symptoms as well. It is a good idea to keep all nuts, particularly macadamia and walnuts, away from your dog.

Dogs love to chew on bones. Bones are a very good way to help clean and maintain your dog's teeth. However, cooked bones should never be given to dogs. When the bones are heated, it causes them to splinter more easily. This results in jagged pieces that your dog cannot digest properly.

Here are some other common foods that are doggy dangers. These are more uncommon but are toxic to the point of causing organ failure, seizures, or even death.

Tomatoes

Excessive Salt

Sugar

Raw Eggs

Nutmeg

Always be aware of what you are feeding your dog. It's fun to give them table scraps and "people" food, but remember to always keep in mind that there are just some things our best friend shouldn't have.

Dogs should never be given alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages can be very toxic to dogs, and cause organ failure. They should also never be given over the counter medications such as Tylenol or ibuprofen.

Some common plants are also harmful to dogs such as daffodils iris, tulips, lily of the valley, and oleander. These plants can harm a dog's central nervous system or even cause coma and death.

And finally, always remember to keep common household cleaners and items out of the reach of your dog. Even such things as mothballs, deodorant, and fingernail polish can be very harmful to your dog if swallowed.

Anti freeze is the most dangerous household item to dogs. Antifreeze has a sweet taste, therefore making it an appealing danger to dogs. Clean up any antifreeze spills in your driveway or garage immediately. If your dog comes into contact with antifreeze, you should take him to the vet right away.

If your dog is acting strange or sick, always seek help immediately. Often times dogs wander into our neighbors yards; and can get into plants, household cleaners, or antifreeze without us knowing it. Use common sense. If you are unsure, it is always better to get to a vet just in case.
