Common Mistakes Made When Watching Someone Play a Video Game

What Not to Do When Someone Else is Playing

Jennifer Amlie
Nobody seems to think about how to watch someone else play video games. As gamers, we sometimes have a small audience sitting back and watching us try to beat the boss or figure out where to go next. It can get annoying when the audience starts screaming out tips or tries to engage in conversation. This is my guide for gamers and non-gamers alike on how to watch video games being played without driving the player crazy.

Mistake: Trying to have a serious conversation while someone is playing video games
I don't mean never talk to a player. But don't try to discuss balancing the checkbook with your spouse while they're getting their butt kicked by a boss. They're not going to pay attention to you and they may get mad if you persist. The best thing to do is watch their body language and what's going on in the game. If you can tell they're tense, angrily pushing buttons, and cursing under their breath, perhaps now isn't the best time to tell them your mom is coming for a visit. Wait until the on screen action has calmed down.

Mistake: "Helping out"
A big pet peeve is when someone tries to "help" when you didn't ask. There are two types of this mistake. The first type is when the audience has played the game already and won't let you figure anything out for yourself. Example: You start a new mission and have a pretty good idea of what to do. The person watching you decides narrating exactly what's going to happen and how to do it is "helping." Just like spoiling a movie, this is a no-no. The second type usually happens during a battle or in a game like Mortal Kombat. This is when the audience takes it upon themselves to scream instructions at you. "Block them!! Block!! Don't you know how to block that punch!?" I do know, but my brain can't function properly while you're screaming in my ear.

Mistake: Grabbing the controller
This is the most annoying mistake. The audience isn't content with screaming instructions. Next thing you know, their grubby hands are ripping the controller from you. This mistake is usually done by small children or overexcited adults. Although they are still trying to "help" you, it's rude and arguing quickly ensues. Unless the player is extremely frustrated and handing off the controller, don't touch.

What to do when someone is playing video games
A person who is composed and excited over the challenge a video game presents should be left alone. Even if the player is struggling with a mission, try to hold your tongue and not give advice until asked. It may be tempting to shout or grab the controller, but it just makes the player more tense. Watching a video game can be exciting and it's easy to get up in the moment. Quietly sitting back and enjoying the game is the ideal way to watch.

My sister used to help me right into bottomless pits in Sonic 2 whenever I tried to play a video game in peace. Can't choose your family...

Great tips. With some puzzle games it's good to have someone watching and helping, but with action games it really does get in the way. I remember watching someone play Doom II a while back, and the motion of the game really made me nausious.

So true, this article is so true. Another thing I hate is just plain commenting on how someone'd have done something different while using a smug tone. (like "omg you used THAT weapon? What's wrong with you?" or "How can you not be able to shoot him". If you have nothing constructive/nice to say, don't say anything. But I really do hate the controller taking thing. My husband does that when we play shooters because I'm really bad at them, but I'd rather he calmly let me know what to do than just take the controller and assume I can't do it.

I guess the bottom line is...don't break the concentration:)

Another thing that drives me nuts is when my roommate sits there and asks a million questions about the game since he's never played it before. I'm trying to focus on the game I don't have time to answer all your questions!

LOL, I attribute my fifteen happy years of marriage in part to the fact that both my husband and I know never to offer unsolicited game advice when the other is playing. I think he knows that if he tried to take the controller from me, he might draw back a stump. ;)
