Common Mistakes People Make Prior to Working Out

Working out at the gym is extremely good for us and it feels good to be in shape. There are many of us who are novices at working out and others who have been at the gym for years. For us novice exercisers, it is nice to have someone to show us how to use the equipment the proper way. If you do not take the proper precautions, you can become seriously injured on the equipment at a gym. Free weights are some of the most dangerous because most people do not know how to lift properly or use too much weight without a spotter.

For starters, when someone begins a workout, the most important thing to do prior is to warm up. Not warming up can leave your muscles stiff, which increases your risk for injury or pulling something. A good 10 minute warm up will prepare you for an intense workout. Make sure you are well hydrated prior to a workout so you do not dehydrate. Cardio workouts are the most important for taking hydration into consideration. Eating a large meal prior to a workout is not good and you will most likely become nauseated and vomit. Wait about an hour after eating to work out at the gym.

Now, once you are finished with your warm up routine and you head over to the weights to start your work out, there are some things you need to consider before you start. First, is there anybody nearby that could provide you spotting? Spotting is when someone gets behind you and makes sure you have control over the weight and that you do not drop it on yourself. Bench press, military press, squats, etc. are very tough workouts with heavy weight and a spotter is a MUST in these situations. Second, make sure that you are wearing the proper workout attire and not wearing sandals. If you wear sandals, you risk the chance of weight being dropped on your foot, which would not be a pretty sight. If you have weak wrists, gloves are recommended, which also help on protecting the palms of your hands.Lastly, bring a towel and make sure you towel yourself off before using equipment. The last thing someone wants on a bench is a large sweat mark from your head. Enjoy working out and remember to take these precautions prior to a workout, you will enjoy the experience much more and will be able to workout with little hassle.
