Common Myths About College

Jody Morse
If you have recently graduated from high school or even if it has been awhile since you graduated from high school, you may be trying to determine whether or not you may want to begin attending college in the fall. Unfortunately, there are many negative myths which are in circulation about college. Some of these college myths may have even made you reconsider if you should decide to attend college or not. Here are just a few of the many myths which are circulation about attending college that you may currently believe.

College Is A Lot Harder Than High School

Unless you are planning on going to college to be a brain surgeon or rocket scientist, college is not a lot harder than high school. When students struggle in college, the main reason is because they are so used to high school teachers who stalk you down to make sure that you complete all of your assignments. The difference is that in college, you will need to take the time and effort to speak with your professors. Good grades in college will not be handed to you with a silver spoon. You cannot just sit around and hope that you will be lucky enough to be given good grades. It does not work that way. Instead, you will need to take the initiative to actually put effort into earning good grades.

College Professors Are Out To Fail You

One of the most common myths about college professors is the fact that they are out to fail you. This is not, by any means, true. While there is no doubt that you may get a college professor who you have conflicts with, this is not a whole lot different from high school - or any other type of situation that you may be in. There is good and bad in everyone. Many people believe that college professors want to fail you so that they can earn more money the following semester when you are sitting in the same seat. The truth, however, is that there are only a certain amount of students who are allowed to take each class anyway. What difference does it make if you are sitting in the same seat next semester or if someone else is sitting in the same seat? None at all. The main reason that college professors tend to get such a bad reputation is because they are not there to follow you around and make sure that you have completed every assignment, which is what many college students expect of them.

College Degrees Are Worthless

A lot of people are under the impression that college degrees are worthless and that they really will not make any type of difference in the real world. The truth in the matter is that a college education is very important nowadays. Many companies will not hire you unless you have at least an associates degrees. Even McDonalds is trying to enforce that it is necessary for their employees to have a high school diploma now. Since there are so many people who are in need of decent jobs and so little decent jobs available, there needs to be some way to sort out the "good" from the "bad" - and college is one of the most popular ways.

Tell me about it! They've all had me scared silly over college, and now that I'm there it's like, really? My professors don't hate me. The assignments aren't that much tougher, just more advanced into the subject matter.
