Common Problems with Your Ice Maker and How to Fix Them

Scott Kessman

If you're having ice maker problems, there are a few tips you can use to fix things and enjoy the benefits these machines bring once again.

Ice makers are fitted with an electric heating unit, an electric motor and an electronically operated water valve so you will need to attach your ice maker to the same circuit that powers your refrigerator so that all these elements will work properly. This will minimize any ice maker problems.

The other thing you need to do is connect your ice maker to the plumbing in your house so that it has a continuous water supply. You obviously need this to make ice cubes. As the lines go through a hole behind the refrigerator, a fault with any of the parts can lead to ice maker problems.

So what are the most common ice maker problems and how can you fix them?

Before we look at ice maker problems, it's important to know how an ice maker works. This can vary from model to model but there are a few ice maker problems that are common to most of them.

One of the commonest ice maker problems is when the machine isn't making any ice. If your ice maker isn't making any ice, this can be for a number of reasons. The first thing to do is to check that it's turned on. Sometimes this simple step is all that is needed to fix your ice maker problems and get your machine working again.

Ice maker problems can also arise as the result of a blockage in the fill tube. If this is the case, you can use a hair dryer to melt ice stuck in the tube causing a blockage. If this doesn't work, you may need to replace the tube.

If you're having ice maker problems, you should also check the assembly for broken gears or plastic arms along the ice rake which are the most likely parts to break down and need replacing. Other ice maker problems can be because of a faulty thermostat, a blocked water line or a broken inlet valve.
