Common Sense Fashion Dos and Dont's

JenniLee
There are many more "don'ts" than there are "dos" of fashion these days. If you can't keep up with all the new changing trends and fashionable wear then at the least avoid the don'ts. Number one rule of fashion is being comfortable. If it looks good but you are hurting the whole time or constantly fixing or pulling on something and can't wait to get home and in your pajamas, then you probably shouldn't be wearing it. You can always find a great look without being uncomfortable at the same time. Clothes that are too tight never look good on anyone and actually make the person look bigger most the time. There are just so many common mistakes people make when walking out the door without an honest second opinion and lack of a mirror in the home, or just very misinformed.

First off women, showing your bra is not trendy, for the love of God buy a strapless bra. Wearing a strap bra with a tube top or strapless dress ruins the outfit, seeing the straps and back of your bra is more of a "trashy" setting trend if anything. At times it can be acceptable to show a tiny bit of strap in a casual setting if you are in a spaghetti strap or tank top. And please ladies, make sure the bra is the right size for you, we wouldn't want any quad boob or back fat now would we. A bra is called underwear for a reason, thus bringing us to our next subject, "underwear".

No one wants to see your thong, boy shorts, granny panties, or whatever is under there. It is not sexy and makes you look easy and tacky at the same time. Women, never leave the house without the proper undergarments if you are wearing a dress, flashing your vagina is a big no-no. As for the men, the saggy pants just make most of us want to de-pants you and run off. Showing your oh so fashionable heart patterned boxers off as your pants hang at your knees will never get you a real woman, you know, the good-looking one with the "job". So buy a belt or better yet some new pants. Now men, boxers are fine, boxer briefs are sexy and look great, but the "whitey tighties" have got to be burned, if no one is going to see them then be my guest, however if you have a hot date don't plan on anyone being impressed, they just are not sexy. And for both sexes, showing your butt crack also not sexy, plumbers butt has never been a turn on, why some young women are starting to think it is has been beyond me.

Not everyone is going to be starring at your shoes so this is an easier one. Knee high boots look great under the jeans or with skirts, most don't look great over jeans. Heels can be worn with almost anything, and look fantastic with jeans. Sneakers go with most anything but please do not wear them with a suit, slacks, dress, or skirt. Get a pedicure or scrub your feet before you put on sandals or flip flops men and women both, maybe try some lotion too, no one wants to see a nasty foot. There is no such thing as "dressy flip flops"; they go well with a lot but not to dress up. Let's face it, "Crocks" are the ugliest shoe ever made, however so many people have them because they are so comfortable that you may pull it off with pants.

The only type of jeans acceptable in a casual office setting would be dark denim, they are usually considered dressier. Pair them with a crisp white shirt and some stylish heels, or nice shoes for the men, and you are ready for the office. The faded denim look is really looking good on most everyone I see it on, some well fit flares for the ladies and some nice loose fit for the guys, looks great. Skinny jeans can rarely be pulled off, most the time the only type of person who can pull it off would be a smaller, thin girl. They just do not look good on most men or average to bigger women. Jeans that are too tight are a common mishap and look terrible, for men and women. If your pants are tight enough to show your twig and berries outline, give them back to your wife. Ladies if you have to lie down and moan to zip up your pants then buy a new pair, the muffin top is the second most unattractive fashion "don't" in history. The most unattractive fashion don't for women would have to also be with a pair of too tight or too high cut pants, the dreaded camel toe, need I say more. Let me add that wearing gym shorts with a dressy outfit sucked in the 80's and it still sucks. Also, spandex shorts for every day wear is not flattering.

The shirt is one of the biggest statements you will make, go for a plain shirt with jeans and no harm is done. Nice sweater in the cold or tank top in the heat. Please do not wear shirts that are too tight, just like the pants, they make you look fatter. If you have a beer gut men, do not wear a tight shirt and tuck it in, it just makes you look like a pregnant man. Women, the longer shirts are flattering and in style, the too short here is my baby fat shirts are not. If you are out in public do not wear a neon shirt, it won't do anything for you, once again a mistake by the 80's. Popped collars do not look good on you men out there, pink shirts however can be pulled off if done right. The shirts with stupid sayings on them, "Everybody loves a redhead", don't. Shirts with Disney characters are also a big "don't" for grown women.

Make-up should be applied evenly, and stop buying orange foundation ladies. Also apply down your neck as well to prevent any line. If you cannot wear blush correctly save yourself the embarrassment and just don't wear it. Big pink or red circles or streaks is not considered applied correctly. Shaving off your eyebrows then drawing them back on makes you one step closer to looking like a drag queen. Doing a little pencil over your eyebrows after properly tweezing is perfectly acceptable. Dark lip liner also does not look that great. Eyeliner too thick just makes you look gothic, and eyeliner on straight men who are not famous rock stars is the last thing most women are looking for. Too much tanning, "tanorexia", is a "don't". Combine that with an overly bleached white or wrongly bleached orange hair, and a broad shouldered woman in a strapless dress with her eyebrows shaved and drawn on and it looks like you may have Hulk Hogan in drag.

Try to dress your age but with class and style. Pajamas may be okay with a quick trip to the gas station but an all day shopping spree in the mall, probably not. Scrunchies, another common 80's mishap. In fact if it was invented in the 80's then most likely it is a "don't". Do try a new hairstyle every so often. Mother's can match their daughter's outfits while they still find it fun. And please do have a little fun with color, black is a slimming classic but worn every day from head to toe can be boring. The newest "don't" seems to be among high school boys, it is apparently "cool" to look like a chick. To wear eyeliner, tight girl clothes and girl "flare" jeans. I just want to ask them to stop now, and parents please do something.

Always feel sexy and comfortable at the same time if possible! And be classy; take an extra few moments to yourself. Make sure you look good to you as well, if you don't like it then don't wear it. And remember folks, just because they make it in your size, does not mean you should wear it.

"for the love of God buy a strapless bra" or none at all. Your choice. Just don't get made when you see people oggling your chest area when walking.

I agree with you. "Shaving off your eyebrows then drawing them back on". That is my favorite lol...I see women doing this all the time and I just want to wipe it off. I just got back from Los Angeles and the whole overly tan thing is an epidemic there. I just strolled by with my normal, even and not orange tan and giggled to myself.

I am glad denim is still in....I might just buy that jacket I've been looking at.........Also.....beware of shiny fabrics.

I agree with everything but the sneakers with a suit or dress. I worked in law offices for 25 years, and had to dress. Since I took public transportation, it was impossible to walk to the train in heels when I was younger, and later, almost impossible to find a decent pair of comfortable shoes I could walk fast in. Once in the office, the sneakers were removed, and I think that's just fine. But I needed to be able to run, what with commuting to downtown Philly every day. YOu never knew what would confront you in the subway or train stations. But I agree you shouldn't wear them with a suit or dress to an affair.

Great tips. I agree totally with the don't show the thong piece. There is way to much of that going around and it's not pretty:)
