First of all, I would recommend not looking at long-established businesses in the fast food industry. Everyone and their brother will be applying at the local McDonald's or Burger King. Instead, think outside the box (or the bun) and you'll be more successful. Here are a list of common seasonal jobs:
Lawn Service/Landscaper. You won't need a horticultural degree to land a job here. Most of these businesses see a sharp rise in business during the summer months, and they will accept all forms of manpower to cover the need. This includes lawn mowers, tree trimmers, and guys for manual labor such as moving rocks, digging up yards, laying brickwork, etc. Be prepared to work long hours, since there's more daylight this time of year.
Garden Supply/Nursery. Most garden supply stores and nurseries see a sharp increase of business during the summer months, and they hire seasonal employees to fill the need. If you like being surrounded by growing plants, this is the job for you.
Construction. When skies are sunny and nice weather is upon us, people are more likely to complete those home improvement projects that have been neglected throughout the winter. In addition, this is the time of year for new construction to boom. Many companies are looking for seasonal work, and for most jobs, you won't need a license in the craft, just a willingness to learn.
Ice Cream Shops. In our area of the country (Michigan), most corner ice cream shops are only open from March to October, and during the summer months, hours extend long into the night.
Day Care/Day Camps/Summer Camps. For those of you who don't mind being in the company of children, there will be many openings for workers in day care or as assistants in day camps. The popularity of summer day camps for children seems to be a burgeoning business, as most parents of young children want to have a safe environment to leave their children, full of structured activities and the companionship of other kids. Some day camps will insist on a background check or CPR lifeguard certification. Summer camp employment is a bit trickier. If you're a student who is interested in summer camp employment, applications should have gone out in January.
Tourist Area Jobs. Upper Michigan is full of tourist areas, such as Mackinaw Island or the golf areas of Gaylord or Traverse City. Many tourist related businesses, such as restaurants, hotels and other attractions, need additional manpower during the busy summer months. Some may offer room and board.
Some tips for successful employment:
Make sure your resume is up to date.
Show up for your interview on time, enthusiastic and properly dressed.
At the end of your employment, ask for a written reference. You may want it for next summer's round of employment.
