Common Superstitions: Do You Believe?

Lana
Good luck or bad luck,we all have heard about both and most of us practice a little bit of superstition.I am going to focus on some common superstitions and share a little bit of their history. What do you practice and what exactly do you believe?

Many believe that Friday the 13th is a unlucky day, this stems back as far as primitive times when man realized that they have 10 toes and two feet so past that must be something bad. Most hotels/motels do not have a 13th room or 13th floor to this day.In all seriousness 13 is one of my lucky numbers.

Finding a four leaf clover is good luck.It is said that if you find a four leaf clover it will bring you fame, health, wealth and a faithful relationship and if found on St. Patrick's Day it will bring the bearer twice the luck. How many people have actually found a four leaf clover? Not me personally, maybe I'm looking in the wrong field.

Walking under a ladder is bad luck. The proverb saying is that if a ladder is leaning against a wall or the outside of a building when the base is on the ground it forms a triangle representing the "Holy Trinity" and many believe that you must not ever violate the "Holy Trinity" no matter what form it is in.Now I never walk under a ladder but I didn't know why until now,I was just told it will be bad luck.

Rabbits feet are lucky. The history of a rabbits foot being lucky transcends from the way a rabbit runs,it's back feet actually touch the ground first considered oddly enough to be lucky but to have the luck of the rabbits foot it must be given to you.I've bought my own that's probably why I didn't have good luck with them.

Breaking a mirror brings 7 years bad luck. Many from ancient times believed because you could see your reflection that if you break the mirror you break your soul and the soul being angered and hurt repels seven years of bad luck for payment.I've never broke a mirror that I can recall and I certainly don't need 7 years of bad luck,do you ?

Finding a horseshoe brings good luck.It was said that if you find a horseshoe that you are very lucky because the iron that the horseshoe is made of is suppose to offer protection against evil presence. But,if you do happen to find a horseshoe you must perform the ritual.pick it up with your right hand, spit on one of the ends, make a wish and toss it over your left shoulder leaving it where it lands.Sounds like a lot of work to me.

Opening an umbrella inside brings bad luck. The idea that imitating a force can create a opposite reaction therefore opening a umbrella inside while the sun is shining outside will bring storms.Nothing better than singing in the rain huh?

Having a cricket chirping in your house brings good luck.According to Barbados their belief is that if a cricket is chirping in your home that money is coming into the household but, once the cricket is found it must be evicted. So,let that little annoying cricket chirp for a tiny bit then boot it out.

Knock on wood.Supposedly knocking on wood will reverse any bad luck that might come your way especially in reference of something you have just said. Many cultures believed that spirits dwell in trees as a a safe haven.I have used this phrase quite often.

Tossing spilled salt over your left shoulder brings luck. While spilling salt brings bad luck because the first spilled salt was from Judas at the Last Supper and he was the one who betrayed Jesus indicating to many over the years a hostile gesture the rebuttal being to turn about good luck is to toss it over your left shoulder,to protect you against the anger and you are suppose to quote " with this case may ill luck pass".I never knew the quote but I do toss spilled salt over my left shoulder even in a restaurant.

I leave you with good luck ventures and well wishes!
