Common Types of Lilies in Lily Gardens

Scott Kessman

There are different types of lilies that you can plant in your garden. By choosing the right types, you can ensure that your garden has flowers in full bloom throughout early summer and mid fall. You have a wide choice and if you are careful with the selection, you can have a riot of colors in your garden, throughout different seasons.

Some of the different types of lilies include the Oriental, Asiatic, and the trumpet lilies. Each one of these comes in various shapes and colors. You can make different lily beds according to your choice.

Although some plants have the 'lily' attached to their names, they are not essentially lilies in the true sense. For example, Calla lilies, Day lilies, and water lilies are not true lilies. True lilies will have bulbs that have overlapping scales, minus the protective cover. They also have large showy flowers and narrow leaves. These flowers come in different shapes and can be found at the end of the stem. Most of these lilies carry a pleasant fragrance and come in a range of colors.

Among the other types of lilies are the Asiatic lilies. These are essentially hybrid varieties that are planted in gardens. They tend to grow very quickly and can adapt to different types of soil conditions. The flowers come in different hues such as the pastel shades as well as the deep hues. They also have dark spots on them. These lilies tend to bloom during late spring and they come in pale pink, white etc.

Some of the other types of lilies are Oriental lilies and they are truly spectacular. They can brighten up any garden with their beautiful blooms and sweet fragrance. They start blooming around mid-summer and come in shades of pink, white, or crimson flowers that may be spotted or edged in dark color. These can grow up to a height of 6 feet.

Trumpet lilies bloom during the same time as Oriental lilies, but the flowers are shaped like a trumpet. These flowers were originally found in either white or yellow, but with the hybridization of this plant, some new colors such as pink and purple can be found.
