Commonly Overlooked Reasons Children Have Problems in School

Maggie Blake
Unfortunately, many children struggle in school. Most parents understandably become concerned if their child's teacher communicates to them that their child is not performing at grade level. A child may have problems keeping up in school for various reasons, and some of those reasons may not be what parents commonly expect. If your child is having academic problems in school, you may want to consider the following possible reasons.

A child's hearing might be a factor - A child can definitely develop problems when it comes to academic expectations of school if their hearing is less than perfect. A child does not need to be obviously hearing impaired to be affected, either. There are children who have problems in school simply because of an ear blockage caused by ear wax. Those most commonly suffering from a hearing issue will often noticeably pronounce certain letters incorrectly while they speak. When my own son was very young, we thought his slight speech irregularities were simply a result of his age, and thought nothing of it. We had always cleaned his ears regularly, but apparently what he needed was a deep ear cleaning. We accomplished this with some hydrogen peroxide mixed with warm water and a bulb syringe. In less than 24 hours, all speech irregularities disappeared entirely, and his academic performance improved immediately as well.

A child's teacher may be the problem - We all understand that teachers do not have an easy job. However, while there are good teachers out there, unfortunately there are also a lot of really bad teachers out there. If your child is having problems in school and you have ruled out all of the obvious culprits such as learning disorders, social problems, and illness, maybe it's time to make sure the teacher isn't the root of the problem. Our children have had some very good teachers, but they've also had teachers who behaved very abusively towards the children as well as several teachers who essentially refused to "teach" at all! These types of situations are not just a matter of a personality conflict, and it is important to look into the situation to be sure your child's teacher is not the source of any problems your child might be having in school.

Children who have academic problems in school suffer not only academically, but often begin to quickly lose their self confidence, as well. The situation can rapidly snowball, so it's important to identify the source of the problem as accurately, and as quickly, as possible. .
