LittleBigPlanet was released in October of last year after much anticipation. Since it was first shown to the public in early 2007, fans and critics alike were hugely excited about the Playstation 3 exclusive game. The physics-based, four-player co-op platforming gameplay is definitely an eye catcher. However, it is the ability to create and share your own levels that made LittleBigPlanet special.
LittleBigPlanet was highly-praised and sold modestly well upon release. The community also embraced the creating and sharing aspects of the game. Well over 1 million user-created levels are already available for players to download and play.
Media Molecule, who developed the game, also released a premium level pack for LittleBigPlanet. In just about a month after launch, they released a new DLC for $5.99. Based on the popular Metal Gear Solid series, the pack contains new music, sound effects, levels and stickers in addition to a new gameplay element with a shooting weapon. Many expect that this would be the beginning to an avalanche of new premium levels for LittleBigPlanet.
However, there haven't been any new levels created by Media Molecule since, which made the community antsy in turn. While no levels were in sight, there were plenty of costume and sticker packs available on a weekly basis for a small fee. This further infuriates the community who wants Media Molecule to focus on creating new premium levels.
Of course, just creating a single premium level takes plenty of work for Media Molecule. It takes up to 10 weeks alone to build a level with high-quality artwork, pacing and polish. Furthermore, the level will then need to pass quality assurance before being made available to consumers. In total, months are required for Media Molecule to build a single premium level in LittleBigPlanet. Because of that, we haven't seen a new level pack since the Metal Gear Solid one.
Media Molecule is assuring fans that new levels are coming to LittleBigPlanet, however. It just might take longer than many fans anticipated. Given the great levels that were packed-in with the original release of LittleBigPlanet, the new downloadable pack will be worth the cash and the extra wait.
One of the new packs could be based on Final Fantasy. This is because the theme was revealed alongside Metal Gear Solid, which ended up having levels. Media Molecule may be holding back on Final Fantasy until the new levels are done.
Whenever it is released, the new LittleBigPlanet levels from Media Molecule should excite the community.
