Community Coffee Review: Still One Pound - 16 Ounces

A Great Louisiana Coffee

Peter Stone
Remember the days when a pound of coffee meant a full 16oz.? Back then, famous brands like Dunkin Donut, Starbucks and Seattle Best were not on supermarket store shelves. Times have changed, but not Community Coffee. Community Coffee has done a fabulous job at keeping the family owned image by providing a quality product. Most coffees found in stores today are 11-13 oz. like Eight O'Clock coffee, and store brands like Sam's Choice.

The whole product's heritage can be found right on the package. The product's been around since 1919 as part of the "Community" country store. The Community Coffee Company is located in Baton Rouge, LA. The Community Coffee Company is a four generation family owned and operated company. A trip to their website http://www.communitycoffee.com/ccc/Content/HistoryOfCommunityBody/ gets you an expended description of American coffee family.

The Community Coffee dark roast product is being reviewed. This grounded Community Coffee is just one of the fine coffees such as other roast varieties, Café Special & Hotel Blend, Colombia, Decaf & Lite, and Private Reserve. Coffee recipes are part of this gustatory tradition. For grounded coffee the dark roast has a robust, full bodied taste and aroma of whole beans, fresh grounded. Brewing Community Coffee sends the smell opening brew throughout the house and neighborhood if the windows are opened. The coffee brews up dark and strong, so you may have to adjust your measurements. The recommendations on the package are two tablespoons of coffee for every six ounces of fresh, cold water.

Louisiana is known for brewing its coffee with chicory, a rich coffee tradition in Louisiana. Chicory is made from the root of the endive plant and was used as a filler and flavor enhancer in parts of northern Europe at least as far back as the eighteenth century. For many years it was used to stretch coffee supplies, especially in hard times such as the Civil War. Community Coffee does not use fillers in its coffee.

Still very involved in the community, Community Coffee will be offering a free 12-oz. iced coffee. Available flavors are: classic, hazelnut, vanilla, or caramel-flavored iced coffees. The free treat will be available Saturday, April 18 2:00-4:00 p.m. at all CC's Community Coffee House stores in Lafayette, LA. All CC's Community Coffee House stores in Baton Rouge are participating. Kiosks are not participating. According to the press release, these iced coffee drinks are a cold-brewed coffee and milk beverage served over ice. The drinks are made-to-order by the CC's® baristas, who use a special 12-hour cold brewing process that enhances the flavor. Along with all other coffee beverages served at CC's Community Coffee House, these new iced coffees are made from the top 1% of Arabica beans in the world.

Community Coffee is the largest family-owned retail coffee brand in America. According to press releases, Community® Brand products are available in Louisiana, Texas and the Southeast in grocery stores, offices, restaurants, hotels and convenience stores. Specialty quality Private Reserve® coffees can be found at CC's Community Coffee House® locations in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and New Orleans as well as in grocery stores in the area and through CommunityCoffee.com. Community proudly roasts and packages its fine coffees locally, here in Louisiana. I grew up on Community Coffee and my favorite Christmas gift from my parents who still live in New Orleans is a combined case of Community Dark Roast and Community New Orleans Blend. Excellent review!
