Haywood Community College
Haywood County's own Haywood Community College is found in Clyde. Here you can earn certificates, diplomas or your associate's degree in a variety of programs from Automotive Systems Technology to Welding, many of which are offered online. Since programs vary according to popularity and teacher availability, it's best to call the college at (828) 627-2821 or visit their website to see what's being offered. A number of continuing education classes, as well as health and emergency classes, are also offered.
Tuition and fees are subject to change based on state legislators or local board action. As of the 2008-2009 school year rates are $42 per credit hour per semester for in-state students or $672 per semester for students attending 16 or more credit-hours. Student fees vary by semester and the number of credit hours. Financial aid is available to qualified students. You'll need to fill out the Free Applications For Student Aid (FAFSA). Southwestern Community College
Just west of Haywood County in Sylva, you will find Southwestern Community College. There are a couple other campuses in Franklin, Bryson City, Cherokee and Cashiers. SCC is a sister school of Haywood Community College, offering a lot of the same courses. Call the college at (828) 586-4091 or visit their website to learn about their current program offerings. Tuition and fees tend to be consistent with HCC and financial aid is available. You can contact the Financial Aid Department at (828) 586-4091, ext 315.
Asheville-Buncombe Technical College
Just east of Haywood County in Asheville, you will find Asheville-Buncombe Technical College. With campuses in Asheville, Enka and Candler, it's easy to find a class that fits your schedule. If you can't find a program at HCC or SCC, chances are AB Tech will have it. Since program offerings vary, your best bet is to check their website or give them a call at (828) 254-1921. Tuition and fees are consistent with the other colleges. Financial Aid is available via grants, scholarships, loans, payment plans and work-study. Contact the Financial Aid office at (828) 254-1921, ext 7520 for more information.
Classes taken at all three of these colleges are generally transferable to other colleges and universities. It's probably a good idea to check with the individual educational institution to confirm before attempting to transfer credit though.
