Community Gardens in Orange County, California

Enjoy, Grow, Give

Loraine Alkire
There are so many beautiful gardens in Orange County, California that it's really hard to pick just a few but these gardens stand out as some of the best for their beauty and commitment to their community.

The Grain Project
P.O. Box 572
Santa Ana, California 92702
The grain project is a community garden in Jerome Park in Santa Ana, California. It is sponsored by the city of Santa Ana in an effort to address the needs of some people in areas of Santa Ana, this largely impoverished area with a small upbeat urban area where hipsters and artists hang out, is beset with a group of people not so fortunate. It has been described by the Grain Project as " An area beset with persons of obesity, diabetes and poverty." Donations to keep the gardens running properly can feed literally hundreds of families.

The Fullerton Arboretum
1900 Associated Road
Fullerton, CA 92831
(714) 278-3407

The Fullerton Arboretum in Fullerton, California is gorgeous, you can spend the entire day there and not see the whole garden, add to that the beautiful Hertiage house, the museum and the El Camino Real bell and you have a wonderful place of historic proportion. Events are held frequently including The Green Scene Plant and Garden show where visitors can participate in environmental education programs and purchase plants and garden equipment. For an annual fee of $100.00 dollars you can purchase a 15' x 15' plot for your own garden. The Fullerton Arboretum is open every day of the year except New Years Day, Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day---and for occasional special events. The hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
The children's garden is open to the public and free for adults as well as children. It's intent is to be a living classroom that changes throughout the seasons. Volunteers are needed and welcome either by financial contribution or actual volunteer work at the Fullerton Arboretum.

Verano Community Gardens at UC Irvine
University of California, Irvine - Irvine, California 92697 : 949-824-5011
These garden plots have some of the least expensive dues in Orange, County California, though space is limited and it's been rumored that there is a waiting list, still at just $30.00 per year beginning April 1 2009, it's worth looking into the website has limited information but the pictures from this website link are beautiful, Verano Community Garden.

Even if you don't have a green thumb all of these places will assist you in growing organic non-pesticide fruits and vegetables for your family to enjoy and in these uncertain times, growing your own can be a pleasant family project that reaps great benefits

  • Community Garden's in Orange County -some of the best.
The Fullerton Arboretum is one of the few places locally where a genuine "Justin Kramer" replacement El Camino Real Bell is installed, as part of a historical education and museum emphasis.

One waitlist that I'm on is 18-24 months - Verano and the other is that 2 or so drop their plots a year, which means I have about a 7 year waitlist!

Welcome back to AC, Loraine! I'm glad you're feeling better. Nice article. I need to get involved in a local community garden.

Hey, girl! These all sound good here where it's 34 degrees, and my herb garden has to live indoors under the microwave light. Nice to "read" you again.
