Community Seeks Ava's Law for Stricter Penalties on DUI/DWI Crimes in Maryland

On December 16, 2011 one family's life was forever changed because of a 47-year-old man who felt that he was okay to drive after getting high on PCP (Phencyclidine), also known as known angel dust, which is a recreational dissociative drug that has both hallucinogenic and neurotoxic effects on those who ingest it and/or smoke it. This man was Andre James Kaczynski.

Because of Andre James Kaczynski's blatant disregard for not only his own health and safety but for all people in Ocean City that day, a 19-month-old little girl, Ava DelRicco, or Baby Ava, is now fighting for her life.

Kaczynski got behind the wheel of his pickup truck and was traveling at a high rate of speed (almost twice the designated speed limit) and failed to stop behind Baby Ava and her mother's car at a red light on 142nd street in Ocean City, Md. Baby Ava had to be cut out of the car using the "Jaws of Life" because she was trapped in her car seat which was jammed up against the front seat. Andre James Kaczynski was taken to jail after being charged with several moving violations and drug charges related to the PCP. He was soon released on bond only to get stopped again for driving erratically on December 22, less than a week after slamming into Baby Ava's car and placing this 19 month old in Johns Hopkins Hospital with critical injuries.

Even after critically injuring Baby Ava and severely injuring her mother (who has since been released from the hospital), Andre James Kaczynski was again released on bail following these second set of charges.

It is hard to believe that anyone would get behind the wheel again high on PCP after almost killing a child, but Andre James Kaczynski did. And it is hard to believe that he would be released a second time on bail, but he was.

Baby Ava's supporters are currently trying to get this news out into as many media sources as possible, including the Dr. Phil and Ellen shows, because they are hoping to change the laws that made it possible for Andrew James Kaczynski to walk free a second time after his callousness put this beautiful 19 month old baby in critical care and fighting for her life.
