Community Service Ideas for Churches

Churches are more than just places for people to worship God and benefit from the minister's sermons although these activities are important in a church. The church is also a place where its' members provide spiritual and material assistance to the less fortunate in their community, and this often done through special outreach events. When planning outreach events, it's a good idea to visit with your neighbors and discuss what their needs are so you'll have an understanding of what needs to be done.

One idea is to hold a school supplies and uniform giveaway for children.This is a good idea for those whose church is in area where there are many young children whose families are struggling to purchase school supplies and uniforms due to financial hardship. Ask fellow church members to donate the supplies and used school uniforms, and also promote the event by taking flyers to schools, community events, clinics, beauty salons and universities. If you want to increase your donations, visit some local school supply stores and uniform shops and ask if they would be interested in donating items for your church's giveaway.

You can also have a health seminar at your church. if some of your church members are doctors or nurses who specialize in various medical disciplines such as cardiology, oncology and pediatrics, ask them to volunteer their expertise and resources at the seminar so that guests can learn how to live healthier lives. Also include some health-related educational booklets, healthy snacks, and free health screenings at the seminar. This is especially beneficial for neighborhoods which lack adequate access to educational resources about healthy living.

If you're interested in helping people find work, you can also partner with a local civic center and host an all-day job fair at this center. You want to include a variety of employers from fields such as retail, healthcare, education, cosmetology, construction work and law enforcement. Promote the fair by doing interviews on local TV and radio stations, passing out flyers to the general public, and mentioning it on your website if you have one.
