After School Programs

Jacqueline Winslow
Do you have a child going into high school? If so, you might be thinking about those extra-curricular activities to keep your child busy throughout the school year. There are so many different activities to take advantage of; the big thing is knowing what is available. Every child is different and for some school is their only priority. For others, they need extra activities to help them stay sane. If you have a child like this, get ready to get them active.

In addition to school activities, there are many outside activities for the high school students to take part of. If you have more than one child, many times you can utilize the same activities for multiple children. The important thing is to do your research. Know what your children like to do then find things for the entire family. Of course, you can run across town from one child's activity to the next, but I've found my doing one activity for the entire family - you can save time, money, and resources.

After School Programs: 4H

Having done 4H in Florida for over five years, there are not enough words to express how much we have enjoyed being a part of an extra-curricular activity like 4H. Many people ask me what exactly is 4H? Does it have something to do with farm animals? The answer is yes and no. The yes part is if you have farm animals then you can totally use what you know.

What is 4H?

4H is a program that provides youth development through focusing on science, health, and citizenship. There are many different activities for children to take part of which makes this a wonderful extra-curricular activity for the entire family. Some of the activities we have done through the year are speeches, barbecue competitions, woodworking, animal competitions, fishing competitions, photo competitions, biology, as well as numerous other activities that my kids take advantage of throughout the year.

4H is a wonderful program that allows you to focus on what your children are gifted or love doing. If you have several children, this program is wonderful as you can target each child focusing on the activities they love!

After School Programs: Community Service

One thing we learned from participating in 4H is the ability to take advantage of community service. You might think your children will grumble and complain at the first mention of doing community service, and the truth is they might. But hold on, because they will enjoy themselves. There is nothing better than that sense that they are doing something good. Whether you go to an old folk's home or take advantage of serving for Ronald McDonald House, there are so many opportunities available. If you want the entire family to get involved, don't hesitate in making community service a family event. Check out Community Service Opportunities to find out what is available in your area.

After School Programs: YMCA

The joy of after school activities is finding programs that are available for the entire family. YMCA is a local program that has a variety of activities for everyone. Whether you have a child interested in karate, or a child that wants to lift weights, you can find what you need at a budget friendly price.
