A great resource for single parents in the Haight neighborhood is a center called the Talkline, or Parent Trap, with a phone line open 24 hours a day for advice on parenting skills, a playroom open for drop-ins, free clothing or toys by donation basis, support groups and counseling for special needs children are available. Local parents I met at the site told me they could not provide to their family without this non-profit. The structure of one parent supporting another has helped many culturally diverse households grow aware of each other. Opening in the early '90s in an old firehouse, the mission statement here was established to be of assistance to low-income and one-parent homes through supportive peer groups. I recommend contacting this organization or stopping in for a visit to learn more about their services. Talkline is located at 1757 Waller St. in San Francisco; the phone number is 415-387-3684; the website is talklineforparents.org.
