Compaq Presario F700 Notebook Review

The Compaq Presario F700 notebook I own was purchased last august for 469.99. I got a discount from shopping at Staples. The computer is lighter then most notebooks I have purchased and it isn't a bad looking lap top either. The F700 has a 1.9 GHz AMD Turion dual core processor along with 2 GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. It has a 15.4 inch active matrix screen.

The Compaq Presario F700 comes installed with Windows Vista home edition and is Internet ready. For the record I will say that Internet Explorer is terrible and that you should download Mozilla Firefox as soon as you get this lap top. In fact it's the first thing I would recommend anyone doing who is purchasing a Windows computer. Internet Explorer is just not what it used to be. Firefox and even Google's Chrome browser will be more then sufficient for your Internet browsing needs.

The lap top worked good for the first four or five months I had it. Then it became plagued with viruses, and they viruses I couldn't remove. Norton was of no use and neither were the various other anti-virus programs I downloaded. The computer would take as much as ten minutes to start up but once it started up it was fine. The battery only lasted a paltry two hours off of the charger, which is low by any standards. This was also on the "power saving" settings, once you put it on standard or high performance the battery would be dead in under an hour. The battery also started to lose its charge after only a few months.

After only six months of use, the hard drive died and I gave away the computer, fed up with it and its problems. I ended up buying an old Macintosh laptop off Ebay and I'm quite happy with that. Don't buy this computer unless your prepared for it to die, and die quickly it will. At least the one I got did, and I was a fool for not purchasing the warranty that came with it as well.

In conclusion, the Compaq Presario F700 is a laptop that at least for me, was plagued with viruses and died after only six months of use. If you are thinking of purchasing this laptop, then I would definitely purchase the warranty if I were you. Not doing so would be a big mistake. I may have just gotten a defective model, but my overall bad experience with the machine makes me not want to invest in another machine from Compaq again. Maybe there was a reason this laptop was cheaper then other similar models.

I have had mine for about a year now. While it still 'does the job', I'm lucky if the battery lasts for 20 minutes... even on power saver.
