Comparing Greek Fat-Free Yogurts: Dannon and Stonyfield Brands

Pearl Grace
Having heard the recent rave about Greek yogurt, this reviewer was more than a little leery to try it. However, after reading about several health-conscious individuals who love it, this reviewer decided to take the leap at a local grocery store and pick up some Greek yogurt to try at home.

What is Greek Yogurt, Anyway?

Greek yogurt is processed a little differently in that it is allowed additional time sitting on cheesecloth to strain off whey. For those who aren't yogurt aficionados, whey is the clear liquid that collects on top of yogurt. In essence, Greek yogurt is thicker and creamier than regular yogurt because much of the whey has been strained away producing a thicker final product.

For the purposes of this comparison, 2 vanilla yogurts were selected. After all, any fruit goes with vanilla yogurt. Throw on some granola, and you've got breakfast. Here's a comparison of two popular dairy brands: Dannon and Stonyfield. This comparison takes a look at both brands of vanilla fat-free Greek yogurt.

Dannon Greek Fat-Free Vanilla Yogurt

Size purchased for this taste test was 5.3 ounces, sold individually. Here's the nutritional facts on Dannon Greek Fat-Free Vanilla: 110 calories, 0 fats, cholesterol 10 mg., sodium 50 mg., potassium 140 mg., total carbs 17 mg., dietary fiber 0 mg., sugars 16 mg., protein 12 mg., and calcium 15 % of daily requirements.

Opening the container, the first observation was the apparent consistency. It looked thicker and had almost no whey collected on top. When you see whey, you have 2 options: either pour it off or stir it in. The choice is yours. By the way, the freshness date for the Dannon Greek Fat-Free Vanilla Yogurt was several days in advance of the "taste date."

Trying the yogurt without accompaniments was out of the ordinary for this reviewer. Interestingly, this yogurt was good, all alone! Creamy, melt-in-your-mouth good. The vanilla taste was ever-present and the texture was that of soft ice cream. What a surprise! Dannon Greek Fat-Free Vanilla tastes richer than other yogurts tried in the past.

After tasting Dannon Greek Fat-Free Vanilla Yogurt, this reviewer spooned the yogurt into a bowl. Then, a handful of washed, fresh blueberries and a tablespoon or so of walnut pieces was thrown in. Now that's perfection for a breakfast or healthy snack. Dannon Vanilla Greek Yogurt could easily take the place of your evening dish of ice cream.

Stonyfield Vanilla Oikos Organic Greek Fat-Free Yogurt

The size of Stonyfield Vanilla Oikos Organic Greek Fat-Free Yogurt tasted for this review was also a 5.3 ounce individual serving, sold singly. The nutritional facts for Stonyfield Vanilla Oikos Organic Greek are: 110 calories, 0 fats, cholesterol 0 mg., sodium 60 mg, potassium 220mg., total carbs 12 mg., dietary fiber 0 mg., sugars 11 mg., protein 15 mg., and calcium 20% of daily requirements.

Upon opening the container, this yogurt looked inconsistent in texture--thicker in some areas and watery in others. There was so much whey on top of the yogurt that this reviewer chose to pour it off down the sink. This yogurt needed a lot of stirring.

As it was spooned into a dish, the Stonyfield Vanilla Oikos Organic Greek Fat-Free Yogurt spread all over the place as more whey separated. The edges of the yogurt became watery and runny. The taste was light vanilla with some tang to it. The consistency and texture in the mouth was thinner and had less body than the Dannon Greek Fat-Free Vanilla. The freshness date, however, was well in advance of the date the yogurt was tasted.
