Both models work in a similar way. You put the tobacco into a slot or hopper. Then, you put a cigarette tube on the nozzle and pull a crank. The machine pushes the tobacco into the cigarette tube and you have a cigarette similar to what you'd buy in the stores. However, there are some differences.
Why the Powermatic is Better
It's faster: To make cigarettes in the Supermatic, you must measure the tobacco for each cigarette individually. The Powermatic measures it for you, saving about a minute on each cigarette.
It's cleaner: As the tobacco is pushed out into the tube, some spillage will occur. The Powermatic has a hopper that catches this extra tobacco. With the Supermatic, it will spill out all over the table. It's fairly easy to clean it up at the end of the session though.
Long tube nozzle: The Powermatic has a longer tube nozzle. It's easier to secure the cigarette tube and results in fewer destroyed cigarette tubes.
Why the Supermatic II is better
It rolls a better cigarette: This is the Supermatic's big selling point. The Powermatic grinds the cigarette tobacco into smaller pieces which makes the cigarette more brittle. The burning end of the cigarette falls off easily. For the year that I used the Powermatic, I resigned myself to a few more cigarette burns in the carpet and on my pants. The Supermatic makes a store bought quality cigarette.
It's cheaper: The Powermatic generally retails for $50-$70. The Supermatic is a little cheaper at $36-$50.
It's easier to repair: Not only does the Supermatic come with a list where you can easily order new parts from the manufacturer, but it's fairly easy to unscrew and replace parts that become damaged. The Powermatic is all welded metal and plastic. It's virtually impossible to repair.
Better Customer Service: Both models come with a limited one year warranty. However, there is virtually no information in the Powermatic box that tells you where and how to redeem your refund. Powermatic's website is no better. It doesn't even mention the cigarette injector. The Supermatic makes this information easily available with full information included in the box.
Those reviews that said the Supermatic was a better machine were correct. While the Powermatic is faster, Supermatic's superior customer service and the fact that it results in a better cigarette make it the much better machine. Hopefully, the Supermatic III will come with a longer tube nozzle. If you're looking to roll your own cigarettes, I'd definitely recommend the Supermatic II. You may also want to look at the Top-O-Matic, which is very similar. I can't comment on it personally since I've never tried it. But, it has received very good reviews around the web.
