Comparing Skype Rates to Vonage, MagicJack and Other Calling Services

Robert Falden
There are many people who want to use Skype to replace their home phone, but they are worried about the Skype rates. The Skype rates will determine how much money is going to be coming out of your pockets each month. Many people were satisfied when they switched to Vonage for $25 a month, but if you can pay even less for the same digital calling service then looking at the Skype rates might not be a waste of time.

Skype rates for calling are divided into two categories. There first category is SkypeIn and the second category is SkypeOut. You need SkypeIn to receive calls and you need SkypeOut to make calls. The SkypeIn is pretty much the process of paying for a number for people to call. This cost about $12 every 3 months which averages out to be about $4 a month. You will receive a regular Skype phone number that people can call with any other cell or landline phone.

The Skype rates for unlimited SkypeOut start out at $2.99. At $2.99 you would be getting unlimited US and Canada calling. The magicJack service only gives you access to United States according to the main website.

As a total, the Skype rates for replacing a home phone would be about $7 a month. That means you are paying less than one third of the price that you would be paying for Vonage even though they both offer digital service with multiple calling features. Aside from that, you can also use Skype as a regular phone through a cordless USB home phone. The Skype rates have changes slightly over the years, but for the most part you will be able to save a lot of money without losing all of the features by using Skype. One thing that you may have to consider when it comes to Skype rates is the fact that Skype of 3G will cost additional fees after the year 2010 is over according the official Skype Blog. In 2011, you may want to find a different way to access the internet or try a phone that has 4G internet access.
