Comparing Types of Dental Braces

Dental braces are used to correct an abnormal bite. An abnormal bite may be caused by missing teeth, crowded teeth, overbite or underbite. Braces apply force on the teeth to move them into the correct alignment. Different styles of braces are available to treat alignment issues. The price and appearance of the braces varies by style.

Metal braces, also sometimes called traditional braces, are often used to correct alignment issues. They are comprised of small metal brackets placed on the teeth, with wires inserted into the brackets and bands put on them. The bands and the wires are adjusted during appointments to achieve the desired movement in the teeth. It is a slow process that can take one to two years or even longer to get proper bite alignment.

Ceramic are very similar to metal braces. Instead of metal, the brackets are made of ceramic material. They blend in with the teeth more, since the ceramic material is white. They are also sometimes classified as clear braces. Clear braces may be made up of a glass polymer.

Lingual braces are applied to the back of the teeth. This makes it very difficult for others to see the braces, so the teeth appear the same as before the braces are applied. They are still metal braces, and they work much the same way as far as adjustments go.

Mini braces are metal braces that use much smaller brackets. The brackets are approximately 30 percent smaller than traditional metal braces.

Removable braces are trays that are used to perform the alignment adjustments. The trays must be worn throughout the day, though they are taken out when eating. Instead of having adjustments like traditional braces, removable braces are adjusted by switching to a different shaped tray every so often.

The different styles of braces cost different amounts. The cost for each set varies based upon materials and how long the treatment plan is estimated to be. In general, the longer the braces must be worn the higher the price for the total brace treatment plan.

Cost and appearance are the biggest factors affecting the choice of braces. Some people may not be a candidate for all types of braces, though. I had traditional metal braces, though I also could have had ceramic braces. However, I was not a candidate for removable braces.
