Sure, it might take a little more time to actually investigate prices in various stores, but you could end up saving quite a bit of cash by doing so. Plus, if you make it a habit to check prices three or four times a year, you won't actually be spending that much time investigating.
For grocery shopping, you probably have a favorite supermarket. Perhaps it has a better selection or nicer staff than the other supermarkets in your area. But why not take a few minutes one day to check out the prices in a smaller or more out of the way store. You might be surprised at how different the prices are and it just might be enough to make it worth while to drive a few extra blocks.
If you aren't going to switch stores, you should at least consider checking the prices of different brands within your regular supermarket. There can be up to a dollar or two price difference between brands of cereal and other pricey items. If you aren't set on one brand, there are plenty of savings to be had. Look at the brands lower on the shelves. These tend to be more economical and are nearly identical to the mid-shelf, or popular brands.
For larger items, such as furniture and electronics, you should most certainly shop around. A computer chair that goes for $100 in Office Depot might well be over $150 in another office supply shop. The best way to check big ticket items without spending too much time running from store to store is to jump online and take a look at the company website. It is easy to price compare between two or more store websites and you might even find some coupon codes to get your purchase for less.
When comparison shopping, remember to check features as well as price. A backpack that is half the price of another one might not be identical in quality and features. If you are getting bad quality for a little less, it just isn't worth it and you ought to buy the more expensive version which will last longer and save you more money in the long run.
Comparison shopping is worth the amount of time it takes. You can save quite a bit of money and the savings are well worth the effort. Imagine what you could do with a few hundred extra dollars every year!
