Competition Format in Archery

Duncan Ng
Hi again,

I'll talk about the different rules in competitive archery.

Generally, there are different categories in archery. Namely the individual compound/recurve male, individual compound/recurve female, team compound/recurve male, team compound/recurve female.

Archers will group into teams of 3 and compete in the qualifying round(a.k.a scoring round). Archers will have to finish a full fita which consist of 36 arrows for each of the 30m,50m,70m and 90m targets for male or 36 arrows for each of the 30m,50m,60m and 70m for females. However, in Olympics, they finish only half a fita which is 90m and 70m for males and 70m and 60m for the females. I believe this is because for the closer distances, the top archers does not differ much. So they do not want to waste time to compete for the shorter distances. Each archer will tabulate their scores and be ranked from 1 to 32. This ranking will determine the individual knock out round where the 1st vs 32nd, 2nd vs 31st and onwards. Each team of 3 will add up their scores and rank accordingly as well. The ranking will be used to determine the team knock out round.

Generally, a competition will be held over 4-5days. The first 2 days will be used to conduct the qualifying round. 90m and 70m for the males, 70m and 60m for the females on the first day. 30m and 50m for both on the second day. On the 3rd day, individual knock out will be carried out. And on the 4th day, team knock out will be carried out. For a recognized regional competition, a dinner will follow after the competition where the prize giving ceremony will be held.

So having known so much till now. Its time for you to start shooting!
